Prayer Walk(2 Kings 4:31-35)
(왕하 4:31) 게하시가 그들보다 앞서 가서 지팡이를 그 아이의 얼굴에 놓았으나 소리도 없고 듣지도 아니하는지라 돌아와서 엘리사를 맞아 그에게 말하여 아이가 깨지 아니하였나이다 하니라//And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but {there was} neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.
(왕하 4:32) 엘리사가 집에 들어가 보니 아이가 죽었는데 자기의 침상에 눕혔는지라//And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, {and} laid upon his bed.
(왕하 4:33) 들어가서는 문을 닫으니 두 사람 뿐이라 엘리사가 여호와께 기도하고//He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord.
(왕하 4:34) 아이 위에 올라 엎드려 자기 입을 그의 입에, 자기 눈을 그의 눈에, 자기 손을 그의 손에 대고 그의 몸에 엎드리니 아이의 살이 차차 따뜻하더라//And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
(왕하 4:35) 엘리사가 내려서 집 안에서 한 번 이리 저리 다니고 다시 아이 위에 올라 엎드리니 아이가 일곱 번 재채기 하고 눈을 뜨는지라//Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

I was stuck. I’d written half of a devotional article when my thoughts dried up. “God, what should I do?” I prayed. Remembering research that found that our creative output is boosted by an average of 60 percent when we walk, I headed out to the trail behind my house and continued my conversation with God. Thirty minutes later I was refreshed. I returned to my keyboard and finished the entry.
나는 막혀 있었다. 묵상 글을 절반쯤 써 내려가다 생각이 완전히 말라 버렸다. “하나님, 어떻게 해야 할까요?”라고 기도했다. 걷기만 해도 창의적 산출이 평균 60퍼센트나 높아진다는 연구를 떠올리고, 집 뒤에 있는 산책로로 나가 하나님과의 대화를 계속했다. 30분이 지나자 마음이 새로워졌다. 다시 키보드 앞으로 돌아와 글을 마쳤다.
In 2 Kings 4:18-35, we read that Elisha and his servant, Gehazi, responded to a Shunammite woman’s plea to help her dead son. At Elisha’s instruction (v. 29), Gehazi laid his staff on the child (v. 31). Elisha prayed. Then he laid on top of the boy. At last, “Elisha . . . walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy . . . opened his eyes” (v. 35).
열왕기하 4장 18–35절에서 우리는 엘리사와 그의 사환 게하시가 죽은 아들을 살려 달라는 수넴 여인의 간청에 응답하는 장면을 읽는다. 엘리사의 지시에 따라(29절) 게하시는 아이 위에 자기 지팡이를 놓았다(31절). 엘리사는 기도했다. 그런 다음 그 아이 위에 엎드렸다. 마침내 “엘리사가 ... 집 안에서 한 번 이리 저리 다니고 다시 아이 위에 올라 엎드리니 아이가 ... 눈을 뜨는지라”(35절).
Scripture doesn’t tell us why Elisha “walked back and forth,” nor does it say what he was thinking. What we do know is that when Elisha’s prayers weren’t answered, he didn’t give up. It’s not difficult to picture him talking to God in this urgent situation.
성경은 엘리사가 왜 “이리저리 걸어 다녔는지”도, 그가 무엇을 생각하고 있었는지도 말해 주지 않는다. 우리가 아는 것은 엘리사의 기도가 즉시 응답되지 않았을 때, 그가 포기하지 않았다는 사실이다. 이 긴급한 상황 속에서 그가 하나님께 말씀드리고 있었을 모습을 떠올리는 것은 어렵지 않다.

Dear God, when I find myself in stuck spots, please help me to walk with You.//사랑하는 하나님, 제가 막혀 있는 자리에 있을 때 주님과 함께 걸을 수 있도록 도와주소서. 육신이 걸으며 하나님과 동행할 때 또한 나의 영이 주님과 동행하게 하소서. 나의 시선이 주님의 시선과 같은 곳을 바라보게 하소서.
