Missing the Divine(Isaiah 53:1-6)
(사 53:1) 우리가 전한 것을 누가 믿었느냐 여호와의 팔이 누구에게 나타났느냐//Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
(사 53:2) 그는 주 앞에서 자라나기를 연한 순 같고 마른 땅에서 나온 뿌리 같아서 고운 모양도 없고 풍채도 없은즉 우리가 보기에 흠모할 만한 아름다운 것이 없도다//For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, {there is} no beauty that we should desire him.
(사 53:3) 그는 멸시를 받아 사람들에게 버림 받았으며 간고를 많이 겪었으며 질고를 아는 자라 마치 사람들이 그에게서 얼굴을 가리는 것 같이 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다//He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were {our} faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
(사 53:4) 그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘 우리는 생각하기를 그는 징벌을 받아 하나님께 맞으며 고난을 당한다 하였노라//Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
(사 53:5) 그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고 그가 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받았도다//But he {was} wounded for our transgressions, {he was} bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace {was} upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
(사 53:6) 우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘 여호와께서는 우리 모두의 죄악을 그에게 담당시키셨도다//All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
(요절: 이사야 53:3) 마치 사람들이 그에게서 얼굴을 가리는 것 같이 멸시를 당하였고 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다//Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.[Isaiah 53:3]
Most people avoided George Chase. He lived in a twelve-foot square shack in the woods where New England’s Pawcatuck River meets Little Narragansett Bay. To the locals, it was obvious George didn’t have a bathtub. They could smell the evidence.
대부분의 사람들은 조지 체이스를 피했다. 그는 뉴잉글랜드의 포카터크 강이 리틀 내러건셋 만과 만나는 숲 속에 있는 12피트(약 3.6m) 정사각형 오두막에서 살았다. 지역 사람들에게는 조지가 욕조를 갖고 있지 않다는 것이 분명했다. 그 증거를 그들은 냄새로 알 수 있었다.
One day a hurricane brought the Atlantic Ocean rushing over the seacoast, washing away the beachfront with its attractive homes. Survivors pulled themselves from the bay and began searching for refuge. Eleven of them, soaked and shivering, found it in George’s cabin. He gave them everything he had: water, milk, ginger tea, and shelter. After the hurricane of 1938, the townsfolk had a far different opinion of George Chase.
어느 날 허리케인이 대서양의 바닷물을 해안으로 몰아쳐 아름다운 집들이 있던 해변을 휩쓸어 버렸다. 살아남은 사람들은 만에서 빠져나와 피난처를 찾기 시작했다. 흠뻑 젖고 떨고 있던 열한 명이 조지의 오두막에서 피난처를 찾았다. 그는 자신이 가진 모든 것을 내주었다. 물과 우유, 생강차, 그리고 거처였다. 1938년 허리케인 이후, 마을 사람들은 조지 체이스를 전혀 다르게 보게 되었다.
It’s sad when we make superficial judgments about others, yet it’s our nature to do so. We do that with Jesus too. We might picture Him as He’s portrayed in old paintings, serenely handsome. But the prophet Isaiah said of the Messiah, “He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him . . . . like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem” (Isaiah 53:2-3). Yet this man gave us everything He had. “He took up our pain and bore our suffering” (v. 4). He offered His life for ours.
우리가 다른 사람들을 겉모습으로 판단할 때 슬프지만, 그것은 우리의 본성이기도 하다. 우리는 예수님께도 그렇게 한다. 우리는 그분을 오래된 그림에 묘사된 것처럼 고요하고 잘생긴 모습으로 떠올릴지도 모른다. 그러나 선지자 이사야는 메시아에 대해 이렇게 말했다. “그는 ... 고운 모양도 없고 풍채도 없은즉 우리가 보기에 흠모할 만한 아름다운 것이 없도다… 멸시를 받아 사람들에게 버림 받았으며 ... 우리도 그를 귀히 여기지 아니하였도다”(이사야 53:2-3). 그러나 이분은 우리에게 자신이 가진 모든 것을 내어 주셨다. “그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였거늘”(4절). 그는 우리의 생명을 위해 자신의 생명을 내어 주셨다.

우리가 이웃된 인간들의 인간성을 놓칠 때 그것은 비극이다. 하물며 우리가 멸시했던 그분의 신성을 놓치는 것은 얼마나 더 큰 비극인가!

Dear Jesus, please help me to see others as beautiful beings created in Your image.//사랑하는 예수님, 다른 사람들을 주님의 형상으로 지음 받은 아름다운 존재로 볼 수 있도록 저를 도와주소서. 다른 사람들에게서 주님의 모습을 발견할 수 있게 하소서. 그리고 항상 나보다 남을 낫게 여기게 하소서.
