Abusing God’s Name(Exodus 20:1-4, 7-8, 12-17)
(출 20:1) 하나님이 이 모든 말씀으로 말씀하여 이르시되//And God spake all these words, saying,
(출 20:2) 나는 너를 애굽 땅, 종 되었던 집에서 인도하여 낸 네 하나님 여호와니라//I {am} the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
(출 20:3) 너는 나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 두지 말라//Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
(출 20:4) 너를 위하여 새긴 우상을 만들지 말고 또 위로 하늘에 있는 것이나 아래로 땅에 있는 것이나 땅 아래 물 속에 있는 것의 어떤 형상도 만들지 말며//Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness {of any thing} that {is} in heaven above, or that {is} in the earth beneath, or that {is} in the water under the earth.
(출 20:7) 너는 네 하나님 여호와의 이름을 망령되게 부르지 말라 여호와는 그의 이름을 망령되게 부르는 자를 죄 없다 하지 아니하리라//Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
(출 20:8) 안식일을 기억하여 거룩하게 지키라//Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(출 20:12) 네 부모를 공경하라 그리하면 네 하나님 여호와가 네게 준 땅에서 네 생명이 길리라//Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
(출 20:13) 살인하지 말라//Thou shalt not kill.
(출 20:14) 간음하지 말라//Thou shalt not commit adultery.
(출 20:15) 도둑질하지 말라//Thou shalt not steal.
(출 20:16) 네 이웃에 대하여 거짓 증거하지 말라//Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
(출 20:17) 네 이웃의 집을 탐내지 말라 네 이웃의 아내나 그의 남종이나 그의 여종이나 그의 소나 그의 나귀나 무릇 네 이웃의 소유를 탐내지 말라//Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that {is} thy neighbour's.

The vintage photograph from World War II, taken outside a town’s Nazi headquarters, carries a warning for all of us. In the photo, a comfortably dressed woman is crossing the street. A man in a suit walks down the sidewalk, while another has stopped to read a bulletin board on the corner of the building. All seem oblivious to the large banner hanging above the headquarters’ front door, half as long as the building. It reads, “By resisting the Jew, I fight for the work of the Lord.”
제2차 세계대전 당시 한 마을의 나치 본부 밖에서 촬영된 오래된 사진 한 장은 우리 모두에게 경고를 전한다. 사진 속에는 단정하게 옷을 입은 한 여성이 길을 건너고 있다. 양복을 입은 한 남자는 인도를 따라 걷고 있고, 다른 한 명은 건물 모퉁이에 있는 게시판을 읽기 위해 멈춰 서 있다. 그들 모두는 본부 정문 위에 걸려 있는, 건물 길이의 절반에 달하는 커다란 현수막을 전혀 의식하지 못하는 듯하다. 그 현수막에는 이렇게 적혀 있다. “유대인에 맞서 싸움으로써 나는 주님의 일을 위해 싸운다.”
This kind of treachery is what God had in mind when He commanded, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (Exodus 20:7). This command covers misusing His name when we curse or when we carelessly shout God’s name when we stub a toe or smash a finger. It also includes perversion — using God’s name as cover for evil.
이러한 종류의 배신 행위는 하나님께서 “너는 네 하나님 여호와의 이름을 망령되이 일컫지 말라 여호와는 그의 이름을 망령되이 일컫는 자를 죄 없다 하지 아니하리라”(출애굽기 20:7)라고 명하실 때 염두에 두셨던 것이다. 이 계명은 우리가 욕설할 때나, 발가락을 부딪치거나 손가락을 찧었을 때 무심코 하나님의 이름을 외치는 것과 같이 함부로 사용하는 것도 포함한다. 또한 악을 가리기 위한 수단으로 하나님의 이름을 사용하는 왜곡된 행위도 포함한다.
We shouldn’t assume we’re doing God’s work simply because others say we are. We must prayerfully check our work with what God reveals in the Bible. How can we know we’re serving Him? Psalm 119:9 says, “By living according to your word.” The God who commands us to “always give [ourselves] fully to the work of the Lord” has told us what that work is in His holy book (1 Corinthians 15:58). What work have you done in the name of God? How do you know it was what He wanted?
당신은 하나님의 이름으로 어떤 일을 해 왔습니까? 그것이 하나님께서 원하신 일임을 어떻게 알 수 있습니까?
Dear Father, please help me be wise, loving, and careful with what I do in Your name and help me guard Your name at all times.//사랑하는 아버지 하나님, 주님의 이름으로 행하는 모든 일에 지혜롭고 사랑이 있으며 신중하게 하게 하시고, 언제나 주님의 이름을 지키게 하여 주소서. 부지불식간에 주님의 이름을 망령되이 부르는 일이 나에게서 절대로 일어나지 않도록 항상 성령 안에서 깨어 있게 하소서.
