Humble Leadership(John 1:19-28)
(요 1:19) 유대인들이 예루살렘에서 제사장들과 레위인들을 요한에게 보내어 네가 누구냐 물을 때에 요한의 증언이 이러하니라//And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
(요 1:20) 요한이 드러내어 말하고 숨기지 아니하니 드러내어 하는 말이 나는 그리스도가 아니라 한 대//And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
(요 1:21) 또 묻되 그러면 누구냐 네가 엘리야냐 이르되 나는 아니라 또 묻되 네가 그 선지자냐 대답하되 아니라//And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
(요 1:22) 또 말하되 누구냐 우리를 보낸 이들에게 대답하게 하라 너는 네게 대하여 무엇이라 하느냐//Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
(요 1:23) 이르되 나는 선지자 이사야의 말과 같이 주의 길을 곧게 하라고 광야에서 외치는 자의 소리로라 하니라//He said, I {am} the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
(요 1:24) 그들은 바리새인들이 보낸 자라//And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
(요 1:25) 또 물어 이르되 네가 만일 그리스도도 아니요 엘리야도 아니요 그 선지자도 아닐진대 어찌하여 세례를 베푸느냐//And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?
(요 1:26) 요한이 대답하되 나는 물로 세례를 베풀거니와 너희 가운데 너희가 알지 못하는 한 사람이 섰으니//John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
(요 1:27) 곧 내 뒤에 오시는 그이라 나는 그의 신발끈을 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라 하더라//He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
(요 1:28) 이 일은 요한이 세례 베풀던 곳 요단 강 건너편 베다니에서 일어난 일이니라//These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
(요절: 요한복음 1:26-27) 너희 가운데 너희가 알지 못하는 한 사람이 섰으니 ... 나는 그의 신발끈을 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라//Among you stands one you do not know. . . . the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.[John 1:26-27]
My friend Butch Briggs has been the beloved coach for the swim teams at a local high school for fifty-one years. Out of curiosity, I asked him how many state championships he’d won during his five decades. In his trademark, gentle tone he quipped, “I’ve not won a single championship because I’ve never swum in a single race.” Trying again, I asked him, “How many championships have your swimmers won?” He happily responded, “Thirty-nine.”

Butch taught me a valuable lesson. A coach plays an important role, but he didn’t want to take credit for what his swimmers accomplished.
버치는 나에게 소중한 교훈을 가르쳐 주었다. 코치는 중요한 역할을 하지만, 그는 선수들이 이룬 성과에 대해 공을 차지하고 싶어 하지 않았다.
Butch’s humility reminds me of how John the Baptist saw his role. John was tasked with pointing people to Jesus as the Messiah — the one who fulfilled God’s promise to send a rescuer. But John garnered so much attention that the religious leaders wanted to find out exactly who he was. In response, Scripture records that John “confessed freely, ‘I am not the Messiah’ ” (John 1:20). Even when they pressed him, John was clear that his role was to announce Jesus’ arrival (vv. 21-23). Jesus was the one they’d longed for (v. 27).
버치의 겸손은 세례 요한이 자신의 역할을 어떻게 보았는지를 떠올리게 한다. 요한은 사람들을 메시아이신 예수님, 곧 구원자를 보내시겠다는 하나님의 약속을 이루신 분께로 인도하는 사명을 받았다. 그러나 요한은 많은 관심을 받게 되었고, 종교 지도자들은 그가 누구인지 정확히 알아보고자 했다. 이에 대해 성경은 요한이 “드러내어 말하고 숨기지 아니하니 드러내어 하는 말이 나는 그리스도가 아니라”(요한복음 1:20)라고 말했다고 기록한다. 그들이 계속해서 캐묻자, 요한은 자신의 역할이 예수님의 오심을 알리는 것임을 분명히 했다(21-23절). 예수님이야말로 사람들이 오래도록 기다려 온 분이셨다(27절).
This aspect of humility — not taking more credit than is due — is a way we can keep a proper perspective regarding our accomplishments while recognizing others for the assignments or roles they’ve been given. Lisa M. Samra
이와 같은 겸손의 한 측면, 곧 마땅히 받아야 할 것보다 더 많은 공을 차지하지 않는 태도는, 우리의 성취에 대해 올바른 관점을 유지하면서 동시에 각자에게 맡겨진 사명과 역할을 감당한 다른 이들을 인정하는 방법이다.

Dear Jesus, please grant me grace to act with the humility You so vividly displayed and modeled for us during Your life and death.//사랑하는 예수님, 주님께서 생애와 죽음을 통해 우리에게 분명히 보여 주시고 본보이신 그 겸손으로 행할 수 있도록 제게 은혜를 베풀어 주소서. 예수님의 겸손을 배우고, 항상 나보다 남을 낫게 여기는 겸손이 몸에 배어 나오게 하소서. 성령으로 충만할 때 주님의 겸손이 나에게서도 흘러 나오게 하소서.
