WINNING BY LOSING(1 CORINTHIANS 9:19-27)
(고전 9:19) 내가 모든 사람에게서 자유로우나 스스로 모든 사람에게 종이 된 것은 더 많은 사람을 얻고자 함이라//For though I be free from all {men}, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
(고전 9:20) 유대인들에게 내가 유대인과 같이 된 것은 유대인들을 얻고자 함이요 율법 아래에 있는 자들에게는 내가 율법 아래에 있지 아니하나 율법 아래에 있는 자 같이 된 것은 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 얻고자 함이요//And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
(고전 9:21) 율법 없는 자에게는 내가 하나님께는 율법 없는 자가 아니요 도리어 그리스도의 율법 아래에 있는 자이나 율법 없는 자와 같이 된 것은 율법 없는 자들을 얻고자 함이라//To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
(고전 9:22) 약한 자들에게 내가 약한 자와 같이 된 것은 약한 자들을 얻고자 함이요 내가 여러 사람에게 여러 모습이 된 것은 아무쪼록 몇 사람이라도 구원하고자 함이니//To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all {men}, that I might by all means save some.
(고전 9:23) 내가 복음을 위하여 모든 것을 행함은 복음에 참여하고자 함이라//And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with {you}.
(고전 9:24) 운동장에서 달음질하는 자들이 다 달릴지라도 오직 상을 받는 사람은 한 사람인 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐 너희도 상을 받도록 이와 같이 달음질하라//Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
(고전 9:25) 이기기를 다투는 자마다 모든 일에 절제하나니 그들은 썩을 승리자의 관을 얻고자 하되 우리는 썩지 아니할 것을 얻고자 하노라//And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they {do it} to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
(고전 9:26) 그러므로 나는 달음질하기를 향방 없는 것 같이 아니하고 싸우기를 허공을 치는 것 같이 아니하며//I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
(고전 9:27) 내가 내 몸을 쳐 복종하게 함은 내가 남에게 전파한 후에 자신이 도리어 버림을 당할까 두려워함이로다//But I keep under my body, and bring {it} into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

“Not winning is in fact more powerful than winning,” Professor Monica Wadhwa argues. Her research reveals that people tend to be most energized and motivated not when they win but when they almost win. Falling just short of one’s ambitions tends to give people the motivation to keep growing and striving. Easy victories, on the other hand, tend to cripple energy and motivation.

Wadhwa’s perspective gives fresh insight into Paul’s analogy used in two passages that compare following Christ to running a race: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 and Philippians 3:12-14. In both instances, Paul emphasizes that believers ought to give their pursuit of Christ and the gospel their all, “straining toward what is ahead” (PHILIPPIANS 3:13) and running “in such a way as to get the prize” (1 CORINTHIANS 9:24).
와드와의 관점은 바울이 그리스도를 따르는 것을 경주에 비유해 설명한 두 구절(고린도전서 9:24-27과 빌립보서 3:12-14)의 이야기를 새로운 안목으로 보게 한다. 바울은 이 두 경우에서 믿는 사람들은 그리스도와 복음을 전력을 다해 좇아야 하며 “앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고”(빌립보서 3:13), 그리고 “상을 받도록 이와 같이”(고린도전서 9:24) 달려가야 한다고 강조한다.
The paradoxical truth is that what we’re striving for - faithfully sharing the gospel (V. 23) and knowing Christ (PHILIPPIANS 3:8) - aren’t things we can ever say we’ve achieved. We’ll always fall short. We’ll never be able to say we’ve “already arrived” (V. 12).
역설적인 사실은 우리가 힘을 다해 복음을 충실히 전하고(23절) 그리스도를 알아간다(빌립보서 3:8) 하더라도 우리가 성취했다고 말할 수 없다는 것이다. 우리는 항상 부족할 것이며, 결코 “온전히 이루었다”(12절)고 말할 수 없다.

Dear God, thank You that I don’t need to fear falling short, but that You use these moments to continually draw me closer to You.//사랑하는 하나님, 감사합니다. 제가 부족해도 두려워할 필요가 없음은 하나님께서 제가 부족함으로 언제나 하나님께 더 가까이 가게 하시기 때문입니다. 다 이루었다는 자만에 빠지는 일이 없게 하소서. 실패의 좌절에서 벗어나지 못하는 것이 아니라 실패를 통해 교훈을 얻고 그것이 완성에 대한 도전이 되게 하소서. 진정한 완성은 그 나라에서 있을 것임을 알고 부족에 대해 실망하지 않게 하소서.
