LOVE WORTHY OF OUR LIFE(MATTHEW 16:21-28)
(마 16:21) 이 때로부터 예수 그리스도께서 자기가 예루살렘에 올라가 장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 많은 고난을 받고 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나야 할 것을 제자들에게 비로소 나타내시니//From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
(마 16:22) 베드로가 예수를 붙들고 항변하여 이르되 주여 그리 마옵소서 이 일이 결코 주께 미치지 아니하리이다//Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
(마 16:23) 예수께서 돌이키시며 베드로에게 이르시되 사탄아 내 뒤로 물러 가라 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자로다 네가 하나님의 일을 생각하지 아니하고 도리어 사람의 일을 생각하는도다 하시고//But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
(마 16:24) 이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라//Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any {man} will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
(마 16:25) 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라//For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
(마 16:26) 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 제 목숨을 잃으면 무엇이 유익하리요 사람이 무엇을 주고 제 목숨과 바꾸겠느냐//For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
(마 16:27) 인자가 아버지의 영광으로 그 천사들과 함께 오리니 그 때에 각 사람이 행한 대로 갚으리라//For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
(마 16:28) 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 서 있는 사람 중에 죽기 전에 인자가 그 왕권을 가지고 오는 것을 볼 자들도 있느니라//Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
(요절: 마태복음 16:25) 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라//Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. [MATTHEW 16:25]
William Temple, a nineteenth-century English bishop, once concluded a sermon to Oxford students with the words of the hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” But he cautioned against taking the song lightly. “If you mean (the words) with all your hearts, sing them as loud as you can,” Temple said. “If you don’t mean them at all, keep silent. If you mean them even a little, and want to mean them more, sing them very softly.” The crowd went quiet as everyone eyed the lyrics. Slowly, thousands of voices began to sing in a whisper, mouthing the final lines with gravity: “Love so amazing, so divine / Demands my soul, my life, my all.”
19세기 영국의 주교 윌리엄 템플은 어느 날 옥스퍼드 대학생들에게 찬송가 “주 달려 죽은 십자가”의 가사를 인용하면서 설교를 마쳤다. 하지만 그는 그 찬송가를 깊이 새기며 부르라고 경고했다. “(가사) 내용이 여러분의 진심이라면 최대한 큰 소리로 부르십시오. 그러나 여러분이 아무런 의미를 못 느낀다면 침묵하십시오. 조금이라도 의미가 있고 더 의미가 있기를 원한다면 아주 부드럽게 부르십시오.” 순간 모든 청중들이 가사를 살피느라 조용해졌다. 수천 명의 학생들이 속삭이는 목소리로 부르기 시작하여 마지막 구절에 이르러 “놀라운 사랑받은 나 몸으로 제물 삼겠네”를 큰 목소리로 엄숙하게 찬양했다.
Those Oxford students understood the reality that believing in and following Jesus is a serious choice, because it means saying yes to a radical love that demands everything from us. Following Christ requires our entire life, our whole being. He plainly told His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (MATTHEW 16:24). No one should make this choice flippantly.
옥스퍼드 대학생들은 예수님을 믿고 따르는 것이 우리의 모든 것을 요구하는 철저한 사랑에 순응하는 것을 의미하기 때문에 심각한 선택이라는 사실을 잘 알고 있었다. 그리스도를 따르기 위해서는 우리의 모든 삶, 우리의 존재 전체를 드려야 한다. 주님은 제자들에게 분명히 말씀하셨다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라”(마태복음 16:24). 어느 누구도 이 선택을 가볍게 여겨서는 안된다.
Yet, following Jesus is also the way to our deepest joy. Life with Him, we’ll discover, is the life we truly desire. It appears to be a great paradox. However, if we respond to God’s love, believe in Christ, and relinquish our selfish, shortsighted demands, we’ll find the life our soul craves (V. 25). WINN COLLIER
그러나 예수님을 따르는 것은 또한 우리의 가장 심오한 기쁨으로 가는 길이기도 하다. 우리는 주님과 함께 하는 삶이 우리가 진정으로 바라는 삶이라는 사실을 알게 될 것이다. 이 말이 아주 역설적으로 들릴지 모른다. 그러나 우리가 하나님의 사랑에 응답하여 그리스도를 믿고 우리의 이기적이고 근시안적인 요구들을 포기한다면, 우리는 우리 영혼이 갈망하는 삶을 얻게 될 것이다(25절).
What will believing in and following Jesus cost you? What will you gain?
예수님을 믿고 따르기 위해 어떤 대가를 치러야 할까요? 그리고 무엇을 얻게 될까요?
Dear God, following You isn’t easy, but I want to give You my life and my all.//사랑하는 하나님, 하나님을 따르는 것이 쉽지 않지만 제 삶과 저의 모든 것을 하나님께 드리고 싶습니다. 나의 모든 삶의 초점이 주님께 맞추어지기를 원합니다. 주님이 기뻐하시는 일만 생각하고 행동하는 주님의 제자로서의 삶을 살아가게 하소서.
