FROM THE DEADLY SWORD(PSALM 144:1-2, 9-15)
(시 144:1) 나의 반석이신 여호와를 찬송하리로다 그가 내 손을 가르쳐 싸우게 하시며 손가락을 가르쳐 전쟁하게 하시는도다//Blessed {be} the Lord my strength which teacheth my hands to war, {and} my fingers to fight:
(시 144:2) 여호와는 나의 사랑이시요 나의 요새이시요 나의 산성이시요 나를 건지시는 이시요 나의 방패이시니 내가 그에게 피하였고 그가 내 백성을 내게 복종하게 하셨나이다//My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and {he} in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.
(시 144:9) 하나님이여 내가 주께 새 노래로 노래하며 열 줄 비파로 주를 찬양하리이다//I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery {and} an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.
(시 144:10) 주는 왕들에게 구원을 베푸시는 자시요 그의 종 다윗을 그 해하려는 칼에서 구하시는 자시니이다//{It is he} that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.
(시 144:11) 이방인의 손에서 나를 구하여 건지소서 그들의 입은 거짓을 말하며 그 오른손은 거짓의 오른손이니이다//Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand {is} a right hand of falsehood:
(시 144:12) 우리 아들들은 어리다가 장성한 나무들과 같으며 우리 딸들은 궁전의 양식대로 아름답게 다듬은 모퉁잇돌들과 같으며//That our sons {may be} as plants grown up in their youth; {that} our daughters {may be} as corner stones, polished {after} the similitude of a palace:
(시 144:13) 우리의 곳간에는 백곡이 가득하며 우리의 양은 들에서 천천과 만만으로 번성하며//{That} our garners {may be} full, affording all manner of store: {that} our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
(시 144:14) 우리 수소는 무겁게 실었으며 또 우리를 침노하는 일이나 우리가 나아가 막는 일이 없으며 우리 거리에는 슬피 부르짖음이 없을진대//{That} our oxen {may be} strong to labour; {that there be} no breaking in, nor going out; that {there be} no complaining in our streets.
(시 144:15) 이러한 백성은 복이 있나니 여호와를 자기 하나님으로 삼는 백성은 복이 있도다//Happy {is that} people, that is in such a case: {yea}, happy {is that} people, whose God {is} the Lord.

Sabin Howard’s remarkable sculpture A Soldier’s Journey breathes with vitality and anguish. Thirty-eight bronze figures lean forward across a fifty-eight-foot bas-relief that traces the life of a World War I soldier. Completed in 2024, the panorama begins with a heartrending goodbye to family, leads us through the naive elation of departure, and moves into the horrors of battle. Finally, the sculpture returns us home where the veteran’s daughter peers into his upturned helmet - only to foresee World War II.
세빈 하워드의 놀라운 조각 작품 ‘어느 병사의 여정’에는 활기와 고뇌가 함께 살아 숨쉬고 있다. 그 작품은 58피트(약 18미터) 길이의 부조를 가로질러 서른 여덟 개의 청동 상들이 앞으로 기울어져 제1차 세계대전을 겪은 한 병사의 삶을 추적해 보여주고 있다. 2024년에 완성된 이 파노라마는 가족과의 가슴 아픈 이별로 시작하여, 전장으로 떠나는 것을 순진하게 기뻐하는 모습을 거쳐서, 곧 전투의 공포로 이어진다. 마침내 이 조각품은 병사가 집으로 돌아오는 것으로 끝이 나는데, 이 때 참전용사의 딸이 아빠의 뒤집힌 헬멧을 들여다보는 것으로 제2차 세계대전을 예견하고 있다.
Howard sought “to find the thread that runs through humanity - that human beings can reach great heights, and they can sink to the level of the animal.” War reveals this reality.
하워드는 이 작품에서 “인간은 위대한 고점에 도달할 수도 있고 짐승 수준으로 추락할 수도 있다는 인간성을 관통하는 실마리를 찾고자” 했다. 전쟁이 바로 이런 현실을 잘 보여준다.
The psalmist David knew well the bloody consequences of war. Aware of its tragic necessity to confront evil, he praised the God who “trains my hands for war” (PSALM 144:1). Yet he also recoiled from combat, praying, “From the deadly sword deliver me” (VV. 10-11). David looked forward to the time when the young won’t die in war, but sons “will be like well-nurtured plants” and daughters “like pillars carved to adorn a palace” (V. 12). On that day “there will be no breaching of walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets” (V. 14).
시편 기자 다윗은 전쟁의 참혹한 결과를 잘 알았다. 악과 싸우기 위한 전쟁의 비극적인 필요성을 인식하면서 그는 “내 손을 가르쳐 싸우게 하시는”(시편 144:1) 하나님을 찬양했다. 그러나 그는 또한 “해하려는 칼에서 구하실”(10-11절) 것을 기도하며 전투를 피하기도 했다. 다윗은 젊은이들이 전쟁에서 죽지 않고, 아들들은 “장성한 나무들과 같으며” 딸들은 “궁전의 양식대로 아름답게 다듬은 모퉁잇돌들과 같을”(12절) 때를 기대했다. 그날에는 “우리를 침노하는 일이나 우리가 나아가 막는 일이 없으며 우리 거리에는 슬피 부르짖음이 없을”(14절) 것이다.

과거를 돌아보면 전쟁에서 쓰러진 이들이 떠오른다. 그러나 우리는 미래를 바라보며 다윗과 함께 “내가 주께 새 노래로 노래하리라”(9절)고 찬양할 수 있다.
