GOD’S TIMING(2 PETER 3:8-13)
(벧후 3:8) 사랑하는 자들아 주께는 하루가 천 년 같고 천 년이 하루 같다는 이 한 가지를 잊지 말라//But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day {is} with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
(벧후 3:9) 주의 약속은 어떤 이들이 더디다고 생각하는 것 같이 더딘 것이 아니라 오직 주께서는 너희를 대하여 오래 참으사 아무도 멸망하지 아니하고 다 회개하기에 이르기를 원하시느니라//The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
(벧후 3:10) 그러나 주의 날이 도둑 같이 오리니 그 날에는 하늘이 큰 소리로 떠나가고 물질이 뜨거운 불에 풀어지고 땅과 그 중에 있는 모든 일이 드러나리로다//But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
(벧후 3:11) 이 모든 것이 이렇게 풀어지리니 너희가 어떠한 사람이 되어야 마땅하냐 거룩한 행실과 경건함으로//{Seeing} then {that} all these things shall be dissolved, what manner {of persons} ought ye to be in {all} holy conversation and godliness,
(벧후 3:12) 하나님의 날이 임하기를 바라보고 간절히 사모하라 그 날에 하늘이 불에 타서 풀어지고 물질이 뜨거운 불에 녹아지려니와//Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
(벧후 3:13) 우리는 그의 약속대로 의가 있는 곳인 새 하늘과 새 땅을 바라보도다//Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Until 1967, units of time were scientifically measured by astronomical patterns: the spin of the earth and its revolution around the sun. But over the centuries, a problem emerged. The earth is actually slowing down in its orbit. Scientists discovered that the unit of the second is longer than it used to be. Gradual though this is, since the days of Christ, the world has “lost” a full three hours of measured time.
1967년 이전까지 시간의 단위는 과학적으로 천문학적 패턴, 곧 지구의 자전과 태양을 중심으로 한 공전을 측정함으로 결정되었다. 그러나 수세기가 지나면서 문제가 드러났다. 지구의 자전이 느려지고 있었던 것이다. 과학자들은 1초라는 단위가 예전보다 길어졌음을 발견했고, 점진적이기는 하지만, 그리스도 시대 이후로 세상은 측정된 시간에서 세 시간을 온전히 “잃었다”고 말한다.
Of course, God created the ways we measure time: the astronomy of orbits and revolutions. Scientists’ calculations may be squishier than we’d thought, but we can stand firmly in Peter’s words: “With the Lord a day is like a thousand years” (2 PETER 3:8). He is arguing against doubters who complained that Jesus hadn’t returned yet. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness” (V. 9). God works in His own time for His own purposes.
물론, 하나님은 우리가 시간을 측정하는 방식, 즉 궤도와 공전의 천문학을 창조하셨다. 과학자들의 계산이 우리가 생각했던 것보다 불확실해 보여도, 우리는 “주께는 하루가 천 년 같고”(베드로후서 3:8)라는 베드로의 말을 확고히 믿을 수 있다. 그는 예수님께서 아직 오지 않으셨다고 불평하며 의심하는 자들을 반박하고 있다. “주의 약속은 어떤 이들이 더디다고 생각하는 것 같이 더딘 것이 아니라”(9절). 하나님은 그분의 목적에 맞게 자신의 때에 일하신다.
There’s more: God’s “timing” is born out of His love: “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish” (V. 9). Jesus will return, and God wants everyone to have the opportunity to come to Him. This is an expression of His love. Meanwhile, we’re to “make every effort to be found spotless” (V. 14).
더 중요한 것은, 하나님의 “때”는 그분의 사랑에 근거하고 있다는 점이다. “오직 주께서는 너희를 대하여 오래 참으사 아무도 멸망하지 아니하고 다 회개 하기에 이르기를 원하시느니라”(9절). 예수님은 돌아오실 것이고, 하나님은 모든 사람이 그분께 올 기회가 있기를 원하신다. 이것은 하나님의 사랑의 표현이다. 그동안 우리는 “점도 없고 흠도 없이”(14절) 살아야 한다.

시간과 하나님, 그리고 사랑은 긴밀히 연결되어 있다. 이 마지막 날에 하나님의 사랑은 결코 변하지 않고, 오히려 한가지 확실한 사실이다.
