TRUE SATISFACTION IN GOD(GENESIS 25:7-11)
(창 25:7) 아브라함의 향년이 백칠십오 세라//And these {are} the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.
(창 25:8) 그의 나이가 높고 늙어서 기운이 다하여 죽어 자기 열조에게로 돌아가매//Then Abraham gave up the Ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full {of years}; and was gathered to his people.
(창 25:9) 그의 아들들인 이삭과 이스마엘이 그를 마므레 앞 헷 족속 소할의 아들 에브론의 밭에 있는 막벨라 굴에 장사하였으니//And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which {is} before Mamre;
(창 25:10) 이것은 아브라함이 헷 족속에게서 산 밭이라 아브라함과 그의 아내 사라가 거기 장사되니라//The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.
(창 25:11) 아브라함이 죽은 후에 하나님이 그의 아들 이삭에게 복을 주셨고 이삭은 브엘라해로이 근처에 거주하였더라//And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.

Thirty years ago, I participated in an activity at an unemployment workshop that I still remember today. My fellow laid-off coworkers and I were asked to write our retirement speeches. Huh? We were looking for work and far from retirement age. But the facilitator revealed the purpose of the activity by saying, “Your speech will probably have little to do with your work.” She explained to us that a job really isn’t the center of our lives. And while we may be grieving the loss of a job, our lives mean much more than being employed.
삼십 년 전, 참가했던 실직자 워크숍에서 했던 과제가 지금도 기억이 난다. 동료 실직자들과 내게 각자의 은퇴 연설문을 작성하라는 것이었다. 우리는 그때 일자리를 찾고 있었고, 은퇴할 나이는 아직 까마득하게 멀었는데, 은퇴 연설문이라니? 그러나 진행자는 “여러분의 연설문에는 아마도 일에 관한 이야기는 별로 없을 것”이라는 말로 이 활동의 목적을 설명했다. 그녀는 일은 우리의 인생의 중심이 아니며, 직장을 잃어 괴롭긴 하겠지만 우리의 삶은 직업 이상의 의미가 있음을 알려주었다.
The details about the end of Abraham’s life remind me of this lesson. He died at a “ripe old age” and had lived a “long and satisfying life” (GENESIS 25:8 nlt). Throughout Scripture, we read about Abraham’s faithfulness in following God’s instructions, but we don’t read much about his work. The faith the patriarch displayed (15:6) reminds me of the Teacher’s conclusion in Ecclesiastes: “To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness” (2:26). The Teacher said this after considering the meaning of life and how one can find enjoyment in the midst of work or toil (VV. 24-25).
아브라함 생애의 마지막을 다룬 자세한 성경 말씀은 이 교훈을 떠올리게 한다. 그는 “나이가 높고 늙어서 기운이 다하여” 죽었고 “오래 만족한 삶”을 살았다(창세기 25:8). 성경에서 우리는 아브라함이 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 걸었던 믿음을 읽을 수 있지만, 그의 직업에 대해서는 별로 읽을 수 없다. 아브라함이 보인 믿음(15:6)은 전도서 기자가 내린 결론을 떠올리게 한다. “하나님은 그를 기쁘게 하는 자에게는 지혜와 지식과 희락을 주시니”(2:26). 그는 인생의 의미와, 노동과 수고 가운데서 어떻게 즐거움을 찾을 수 있는지를 고민한 후 이런 말을 했다(24-25절).
Even during times of loss and anxiety brought by unemployment, it’s helpful to reflect on Abraham’s example and the Teacher’s words-pointing us to true satisfaction found only in God. KATARA PATTON
