FOUNTAINS OR DRAINS?(PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4, 14-20)
(빌 2:1) 그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든//If {there be} therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
(빌 2:2) 마음을 같이하여 같은 사랑을 가지고 뜻을 합하며 한마음을 품어//Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, {being} of one accord, of one mind.
(빌 2:3) 아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고//{Let} nothing {be done} through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
(빌 2:4) 각각 자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보아 나의 기쁨을 충만하게 하라//Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
(빌 2:14) 모든 일을 원망과 시비가 없이 하라//Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
(빌 2:15) 이는 너희가 흠이 없고 순전하여 어그러지고 거스르는 세대 가운데서 하나님의 흠 없는 자녀로 세상에서 그들 가운데 빛들로 나타내며//That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
(빌 2:16) 생명의 말씀을 밝혀 나의 달음질이 헛되지 아니하고 수고도 헛되지 아니함으로 그리스도의 날에 내가 자랑할 것이 있게 하려 함이라//Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.
(빌 2:17) 만일 너희 믿음의 제물과 섬김 위에 내가 나를 전제로 드릴지라도 나는 기뻐하고 너희 무리와 함께 기뻐하리니//Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
(빌 2:18) 이와 같이 너희도 기뻐하고 나와 함께 기뻐하라//For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.
(빌 2:19) 내가 디모데를 속히 너희에게 보내기를 주 안에서 바람은 너희의 사정을 앎으로 안위를 받으려 함이니//But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
(빌 2:20) 이는 뜻을 같이하여 너희 사정을 진실히 생각할 자가 이밖에 내게 없음이라//For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.

Sometimes a bit of wisdom drops in when we least expect it. That happened recently as I was reading an article about American football player Travis Kelce. A frustrated coach once told him, “Everybody you meet in this world is either a fountain or a drain.” You can probably figure out which one Kelce was being!
우리에게는 때로 생각지 않았던 지혜가 반짝인다. 나는 얼마전 미식축구 선수 트래비스 켈시에 관한 기사를 읽다가 그런 경험을 했다. 한번은 답답했던 코치가 그에게 이런 말을 했다고 한다. “사람들은 모두 샘물과 배수구, 둘 중 하나야.” 여기서 켈시를 어느 유형으로 보았는지 짐작할 수가 있을 것이다!
Perhaps all of us have a bit of both elements in us. But at any given moment, we’re likely behaving one way or the other. And our call to follow Jesus means becoming more fountain, less drain.
어쩌면 우리 모두에게 두 요소가 조금씩 다 있을 수 있다. 그러나 어느 순간에는 그 중 한 쪽으로 치우쳐 행동하기가 쉽다. 예수님을 따르라고 우리를 부르신 것은 배수구보다는 샘으로 살아가라는 의미이다.
I hear a similar idea in Philippians 2, where Paul challenges us to imitate Jesus’ humility and focus on others. Paul contrasts what drains life from others with what fills them up: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (VV. 3-4). A bit later in this chapter, he adds bluntly, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing” (V. 14).
빌립보서 2장에도 이와 비슷한 말씀이 있다. 바울은 우리에게 예수님의 겸손을 본받아 다른 사람을 먼저 위하라고 한다. 바울은 다른 사람의 생명에서 무언가를 빼앗아가는 것과 채워주는 것을 대비해 말한다. “아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고, 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고, 각각 자기 일을 돌볼 뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보아 나의 기쁨을 충만케 하라”(3–4절). 그는 이어서 이 장의 후반부에서 확실하게 말한다. “모든 일을 원망이나 시비가 없이 하라”(14절).
What does it look like to be a drain? Being self-focused and arrogant; complaining and arguing. And being a fountain? Paul says of Timothy, “I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare” (V. 20).
배수구와 같은 모습은 어떤 것일까? 자기 중심적이고, 교만하며, 불평하고 다투는 모습이다. 반면에 샘과 같은 모습은 무엇일까? 바울은 디모데에 대해 말하면서 “나와 같은 마음을 가지고 여러분을 진심으로 염려해 줄 사람은 디모데 밖에 없습니다”(20절, 현대인의 성경)라고 했다.

Dear Father, please help me to be a fountain of life who pours encouragement and hope into everyone I encounter.//사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 제가 만나는 모든 사람에게 격려와 희망을 부어주는 생명의 샘이 되게 도와주소서. 배수구가 되지 않도록 나를 돌아보며 다스리며 살아가게 하소서. 나보다 남을 낫게 여기는 겸손함을 허락하소서.
