SMALL BEGINNINGS(ZECHARIAH 4:1-10)
(슥 4:1) 내게 말하던 천사가 다시 와서 나를 깨우니 마치 자는 사람이 잠에서 깨어난 것 같더라//And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep.
(슥 4:2) 그가 내게 묻되 네가 무엇을 보느냐 내가 대답하되 내가 보니 순금 등잔대가 있는데 그 위에는 기름 그릇이 있고 또 그 기름 그릇 위에 일곱 등잔이 있으며 그 기름 그릇 위에 있는 등잔을 위해서 일곱 관이 있고//And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, And behold a candlestick all {of} gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which {are} upon the top thereof:
(슥 4:3) 그 등잔대 곁에 두 감람나무가 있는데 하나는 그 기름 그릇 오른쪽에 있고 하나는 그 왼쪽에 있나이다 하고//And two olive trees by it, one upon the right {side} of the bowl, and the other upon the left {side} thereof.
(슥 4:4) 내게 말하는 천사에게 물어 이르되 내 주여 이것들이 무엇이니이까 하니//So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What {are} these, my lord?
(슥 4:5) 내게 말하는 천사가 대답하여 이르되 네가 이것들이 무엇인지 알지 못하느냐 하므로 내가 대답하되 내 주여 내가 알지 못하나이다 하니//Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
(슥 4:6) 그가 내게 대답하여 이르되 여호와께서 스룹바벨에게 하신 말씀이 이러하니라 만군의 여호와께서 말씀하시되 이는 힘으로 되지 아니하며 능력으로 되지 아니하고 오직 나의 영으로 되느니라//Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This {is} the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.
(슥 4:7) 큰 산아 네가 무엇이냐 네가 스룹바벨 앞에서 평지가 되리라 그가 머릿돌을 내놓을 때에 무리가 외치기를 은총, 은총이 그에게 있을지어다 하리라 하셨고//Who {art} thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel {thou shalt become} a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone {thereof with} shoutings, {crying}, Grace, grace unto it.
(슥 4:8) 여호와의 말씀이 또 내게 임하여 이르시되//Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,
(슥 4:9) 스룹바벨의 손이 이 성전의 기초를 놓았은즉 그의 손이 또한 그 일을 마치리라 하셨나니 만군의 여호와께서 나를 너희에게 보내신 줄을 네가 알리라 하셨느니라//The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you.
(슥 4:10) 작은 일의 날이라고 멸시하는 자가 누구냐 사람들이 스룹바벨의 손에 다림줄이 있음을 보고 기뻐하리라 이 일곱은 온 세상에 두루 다니는 여호와의 눈이라 하니라//For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel {with} those seven; they {are} the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.
(요절: 스가랴 4:10) 작은 일의 날이라고 멸시하는 자가 누구냐… 스룹바벨의 손에 다림줄이 있음을 보고 기뻐하리라//Who dares despise the day of small things, since (God’s) eyes … will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel? [ZECHARIAH 4:10]
In 1848, engineer Charles Ellet Jr. puzzled over how to begin the process of constructing the first bridge over the Niagara Falls gorge. How would they get a cable across the river? Prompted by a dream, Charles decided to host a kite-flying contest. American teenager Homan Walsh won five dollars when his kite landed on the American side of the river. Homan’s kite string was secured to a tree and used to pull a light cord back across the river, then progressively heavier cords until heavy wire cable was in place. This was the small beginning of the construction of the Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge.

The bridge’s challenges and inauspicious beginnings mirror those faced by those working to rebuild God’s temple after returning from captivity in Babylon. An angel awakened the prophet Zechariah with a message that nothing would thwart God’s work - it would all be accomplished “by (his) Spirit” (ZECHARIAH 4:6). Some of those who’d seen the temple in its previous glory were fearful that the rebuilt version would pale in comparison (EZRA 3:12). The angel encouraged Zechariah that they shouldn’t “despise the day of small things” because God would “rejoice” in seeing the work begun (ZECHARIAH 4:10).
다리 건설 과정의 어려움과 불안했던 시작은 바벨론 포로 생활에서 돌아와 하나님의 성전을 재건하려는 사람들이 만난 어려움과 비슷하다. 천사는 선지자 스가랴를 깨워 아무도 하나님의 계획을 막지 못하며, 모든 것은 “(하나님의) 영”으로 된다는 메시지를 전했다(스가랴 4:6). 이전에 영광 가운데 지어진 성전을 보았던 일부 사람들은 재건하는 성전이 전의 것에 비해 초라해 보일까 두려웠다(에스라 3:12). 천사는 스가랴에게 “작은 일들의 날이라고 멸시해선 안된다”고 격려하며, 하나님께서 그 일의 시작을 “기뻐하실 것”이라고 했다(스가랴 4:10).

하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 일이 아무리 작아 보일지라도, 하나님은 연줄과 같은 작은 것을 사용해 그의 위대한 일을 이루시는 것을 알 때 우리는 힘을 낼 수 있다.
