JESUS-FOOD FOR THE SOUL(JOHN 6:35, 41-51)
(요 6:35) 예수께서 이르시되 나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 자는 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라//And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
(요 6:41) 자기가 하늘에서 내려온 떡이라 하시므로 유대인들이 예수에 대하여 수군거려//The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.
(요 6:42) 이르되 이는 요셉의 아들 예수가 아니냐 그 부모를 우리가 아는데 자기가 지금 어찌하여 하늘에서 내려왔다 하느냐//And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
(요 6:43) 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 너희는 서로 수군거리지 말라//Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.
(요 6:44) 나를 보내신 아버지께서 이끌지 아니하시면 아무도 내게 올 수 없으니 오는 그를 내가 마지막 날에 다시 살리리라//No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
(요 6:45) 선지자의 글에 그들이 다 하나님의 가르치심을 받으리라 기록되었은즉 아버지께 듣고 배운 사람마다 내게로 오느니라//It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
(요 6:46) 이는 아버지를 본 자가 있다는 것이 아니니라 오직 하나님에게서 온 자만 아버지를 보았느니라//Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
(요 6:47) 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 믿는 자는 영생을 가졌나니//Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
(요 6:48) 내가 곧 생명의 떡이니라//I am that bread of life.
(요 6:49) 너희 조상들은 광야에서 만나를 먹었어도 죽었거니와//Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
(요 6:50) 이는 하늘에서 내려오는 떡이니 사람으로 하여금 먹고 죽지 아니하게 하는 것이니라//This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
(요 6:51) 나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 떡이니 사람이 이 떡을 먹으면 영생하리라 내가 줄 떡은 곧 세상의 생명을 위한 내 살이니라 하시니라//I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

In the African American home I was raised in, meals often included scrumptious “soul food.” The term originated in the mid-1960s when “soul” was a common term used to describe African American culture. Soul food menu items included fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, greens, sweet potatoes, cornbread, and more. Desserts were a bonus; the “tastebud-tickling” peach cobbler was the most satisfying to me. What a feast!
내가 자란 아프리카계 미국인 가정에는 식사 메뉴에 종종 맛있는 영혼의 양식 “소울 푸드”가 있었다. 이 단어는 1960년 대 중반에 생겨났으며 당시 “소울”은 아프리카계 미국인의 문화를 표현하는 일반적인 단어였다. 소울 푸드는 후라이드 치킨, 치즈마카로니, 야채, 고구마, 옥수수빵 등 다양한 음식을 포함하고 있다. 디저트는 덤이었는데 그 중에서도 군침이 돌게 하는 것은 복숭아맛 코블러였다. 잔치가 따로 없다!
Feasting in different cultures looks different, but because food is essential for life, Jesus’ words in John 6:35 are significant for all people: “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
각 문화권마다 상에 올리는 잔치 음식은 다르겠지만, 음식을 먹어야 사람이 살 수 있다는 점에서 요한복음 6장 35절에 있는 예수님 말씀은 모든 사람에게 중요한 의미를 가진다. “나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 사람은 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라.”
Such claims as these would be outrageous if they were made by a mere human being. But Jesus, the Christ, could make such astounding claims because He’s the very Son of God. He told “sign-seekers” - those seeking immediate, short-term benefit (SEE VV. 2, 14, 26, 30) - that satisfaction of physical hunger wasn’t enough. As the Son of God, Jesus is the source of true life (14:6) and the sustainer of life. All those who believe in Him for the forgiveness of sins through His death and resurrection (11:25-26) share His life. Jesus is the essential food for the soul. Life, nourishment, and true satisfaction are found in Him alone. ARTHUR JACKSON
보통 사람이 이러한 주장을 했다면, 터무니없는 말로 들렸을 것이다. 하지만 예수 그리스도는 바로 하나님의 아들이시기 때문에 이런 놀라운 주장을 하실 수 있었다. 예수님은 당장 눈에 보이는 이익만 추구하는 “표적을 찾는 사람들”(2, 14, 26, 30절)에게 단순히 배고픔을 채우는 일이 전부가 아님을 말씀하신 것이다. 하나님의 아들 예수님이야말로 참 생명의 근원이시며 (14:6) 생명을 지키시는 분이시다. 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 모든 죄가 사해진다는 사실을 믿는 사람들은 누구나 그 분과 영원한 삶을 함께 살 수 있다(11:25-26). 예수님은 ‘우리 영혼이 꼭 필요로 하는 양식’이다. 우리의 생명, 영적 양육, 그리고 진정한 만족은 오직 그분 안에서만 찾을 수 있다.
How does Jesus nourish and satisfy you? What’s keeping you from seeking the one who says, “I am the bread of life”?
예수님은 당신을 어떻게 양육하고 만족하게 하시나요? “나는 생명의 떡”이라고 말씀하신 분께 나아가는 데 무엇이 방해가 되고 있나요?
Dear Jesus, You’re the giver and sustainer of life. May I find satisfaction in You.//사랑하는 예수님, 주님은 생명을 주시고 지키시는 분입니다. 주님 안에서 진정한 만족을 찾게 하소서. 오직 주만이 나의 반석이시니 또한 나의 유일한 만족이 되심을 고백합니다. 주님 한분만으로 만족하는 나의 삶이 되게 하소서.
