When They Don’t See(1 Samuel 8:1-9)
(삼상 8:1) 사무엘이 늙으매 그의 아들들을 이스라엘 사사로 삼으니//And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
(삼상 8:2) 장자의 이름은 요엘이요 차자의 이름은 아비야라 그들이 브엘세바에서 사사가 되니라//Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: {they were} judges in Beersheba.
(삼상 8:3) 그의 아들들이 자기 아버지의 행위를 따르지 아니하고 이익을 따라 뇌물을 받고 판결을 굽게 하니라//And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
(삼상 8:4) 이스라엘 모든 장로가 모여 라마에 있는 사무엘에게 나아가서//Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
(삼상 8:5) 그에게 이르되 보소서 당신은 늙고 당신의 아들들은 당신의 행위를 따르지 아니하니 모든 나라와 같이 우리에게 왕을 세워 우리를 다스리게 하소서 한지라//And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
(삼상 8:6) 우리에게 왕을 주어 우리를 다스리게 하라 했을 때에 사무엘이 그것을 기뻐하지 아니하여 여호와께 기도하매//But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
(삼상 8:7) 여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 백성이 네게 한 말을 다 들으라 이는 그들이 너를 버림이 아니요 나를 버려 자기들의 왕이 되지 못하게 함이니라//And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
(삼상 8:8) 내가 그들을 애굽에서 인도하여 낸 날부터 오늘까지 그들이 모든 행사로 나를 버리고 다른 신들을 섬김 같이 네게도 그리하는도다//According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
(삼상 8:9) 그러므로 그들의 말을 듣되 너는 그들에게 엄히 경고하고 그들을 다스릴 왕의 제도를 가르치라//Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

Nuñez tumbled down the mountain and into a valley where everyone was blind. A disease had robbed the original settlers of sight, and subsequent generations — all born blind — had adapted to life without being able to see. Nuñez tried to explain what it was like to possess eyesight, but they weren’t interested. Eventually, he found a passage through the mountain peaks that had prevented him from leaving the valley. He was free! But from his vantage point he now saw that a rockslide was about to crush the blind dwellers below. He tried to warn them, but they ignored him.
누녜스는 산을 내려와 계곡으로 굴러떨어졌고, 그곳에는 모두가 앞을 보지 못했다. 질병이 원주민의 시력을 앗아갔고, 그 후 세대는 모두 시각 장애를 가지고 태어나 앞을 보지 못한 채 생활에 적응해 왔다. 누녜스는 시력을 되찾는 것이 어떤 것인지 설명하려 했지만 사람들은 관심을 보이지 않았다. 결국 그는 계곡을 떠나지 못하게 막고 있던 산봉우리 사이로 통로를 발견했다. 그는 자유의 몸이 되었다! 하지만 그는 이제 자신의 유리한 지점에서 산사태가 아래쪽의 시각장애인들을 덮치려는 것을 보았다. 그는 그들에게 경고하려고 했지만 그들은 그를 무시했다.
This tale by H. G. Wells, “The Country of the Blind,” would likely resonate with the prophet Samuel. Toward the end of his life, his “sons did not follow his ways” in loving and serving God (1 Samuel 8:3). Their spiritual blindness was mirrored by “the elders of Israel” (v. 4), who told Samuel to “give us a king” (v. 6). They’d all turned their eyes from God and faith in Him. God told Samuel, “It is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me” (v. 7).
H. G. 웰스의 소설 '눈먼 자들의 나라'는 사무엘 선지자에게도 공감을 불러일으킬 만한 이야기이다. 사무엘의 생애 말년에 하나님을 사랑하고 그를 섬기는 데에 있어서 그의 “아들들이 자기 아버지의 행위를 따르지 아니하고”(사무엘상 8:3). 그들의 영적 실명은 사무엘에게 “우리에게 왕을 주라”(6절)고 말한 “이스라엘의 장로들”(4절)에 의해 반영되었다. 그들은 모두 하나님과 그분에 대한 믿음에서 눈을 돌렸던 것이다. 하나님은 사무엘에게 “그들이 너를 버림이 아니요 나를 버린 것이다”(7절)라고 말씀하셨다.
It can hurt when those we care for reject God in spiritual blindness. But there’s hope even for those whom “the god of this age has blinded” (2 Corinthians 4:4). Love them. Pray for them. The one who “made his light shine in our hearts” (v. 6) can do the same for them. Tom Felten
우리가 돌보는 사람들이 영적 실명 상태에서 하나님을 거부할 때 마음이 아플 수 있다. 그러나 “이 세상의 신이 믿지 아니하는 자들의 마음을 혼미하게 한”(고린도후서 4:4) 사람들에게도 희망은 있다. 그들을 사랑하라. 그들을 위해 기도하라. “우리 마음에 그의 빛을 비추신"(6절) 분께서도 그들을 위해 똑같이 해 주실 수 있다.
How does it encourage you to know that God sees those who can’t see Him? Why is there always hope for even the spiritually blind?
