Joy in Jesus(John 16:16-24)
(요 16:16) 조금 있으면 너희가 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하시니//A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
(요 16:17) 제자 중에서 서로 말하되 우리에게 말씀하신 바 조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하시며 또 내가 아버지께로 감이라 하신 것이 무슨 말씀이냐 하고//Then said {some} of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
(요 16:18) 또 말하되 조금 있으면이라 하신 말씀이 무슨 말씀이냐 무엇을 말씀하시는지 알지 못하노라 하거늘//They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
(요 16:19) 예수께서 그 묻고자 함을 아시고 이르시되 내 말이 조금 있으면 나를 보지 못하겠고 또 조금 있으면 나를 보리라 하므로 서로 문의하느냐//Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
(요 16:20) 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희는 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐하리라 너희는 근심하겠으나 너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라//Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
(요 16:21) 여자가 해산하게 되면 그 때가 이르렀으므로 근심하나 아기를 낳으면 세상에 사람 난 기쁨으로 말미암아 그 고통을 다시 기억하지 아니하느니라//A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
(요 16:22) 지금은 너희가 근심하나 내가 다시 너희를 보리니 너희 마음이 기쁠 것이요 너희 기쁨을 빼앗을 자가 없으리라//And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
(요 16:23) 그 날에는 너희가 아무 것도 내게 묻지 아니하리라 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 무엇이든지 아버지께 구하는 것을 내 이름으로 주시리라//And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give {it} you.
(요 16:24) 지금까지는 너희가 내 이름으로 아무 것도 구하지 아니하였으나 구하라 그리하면 받으리니 너희 기쁨이 충만하리라//Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
(요절: 요한복음 16:20,22) 너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라 ... 너희 기쁨을 빼앗을 자가 없으리라//Your grief will turn to joy . . . and no one will take away your joy.[John 16:20, 22]
“I have the right to be happy,” said a teenager as she spoke before a legislature. Yet she could have been anyone, anywhere, speaking for everybody. It’s our human cry. One self-help guru even said, “God wants you to be happy.”
“저는 행복할 권리가 있습니다.” 한 십대가 입법부 앞에서 연설하면서 말니다. 하지만 그 소녀는 누구나, 어디서나, 모든 사람을 대변할 수 있었다. 그것은 우리 인간의 외침이다. 한 자조 전문가도 “하나님은 당신이 행복하기를 원한다”고 말하기도 했다.
Is that true? It’s not wrong to pursue happiness. That desirable state of mind, however, ebbs and flows with our moment-by-moment circumstances, and the fulfillment of one person’s desires can crush the happiness of another.
정말인가? 행복을 추구하는 것은 잘못된 것이 아니다. 하지만 바람직한 마음 상태는 순간순간 상황에 따라 기복이 심하고, 한 사람의 욕구 충족이 다른 사람의 행복을 짓밟을 수 있다.
Jesus points us to something better. He knew He was about to be nailed to a Roman cross, where He would bear the weight of the world’s sin. Yet His concern was for His disciples. He told them, “You will weep and mourn while the world rejoices.” But He also said, “Your grief will turn to joy” (John 16:20). Then He promised, “No one will take away your joy” (v. 22).
예수님은 우리에게 더 나은 것을 가리키신다. 예수님은 곧 로마의 십자가에 못 박혀 세상의 죄의 무게를 짊어지실 것을 알고 계셨다. 그러나 그분의 관심은 제자들이었다. 주님은 제자들에게 “세상은 기뻐하겠으나 너희는 울고 슬퍼할 것이다”라고 말씀하셨다. 그러나 주님은 또한 “너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라”(요한복음 16:20)고 말씀하셨다. 그리고 “너희 기쁨을 빼앗을 자가 없으리라”고 약속하셨다(22절).
This kind of joy is more than a good feeling based on desirable things happening to us. It grows out of doing the will of our Father in heaven. Jesus also said, “Seek first [God’s] kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
이런 종류의 기쁨은 우리에게 일어나는 바람직한 일들에 근거한 좋은 감정 그 이상이다. 그것은 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지의 뜻을 행하는 데서 비롯된다. 예수님도 “그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라”(마 6:33)고 말씀하셨다.
Happiness can slip away with the next unpleasant circumstance. The joy that comes from following Jesus can thrive despite those circumstances. Tim Gustafson
행복은 다음 불쾌한 상황과 함께 사라질 수 있다. 예수님을 따르는 데서 오는 기쁨은 그러한 상황에서도 번성할 수 있다.

Dear Father, please teach me to learn the difference between temporary happiness and lasting joy.//사랑하는 아버지, 일시적인 행복과 지속적인 기쁨의 차이를 배울 수 있도록 가르쳐주소서. 세상이 주는 일시적인 행복감보다는 주님이 주시는 영원한 기쁨에 더 마음을 두게 하소서.
