Shaped by God(Jeremiah 18:1-10)
(렘 18:1) 여호와께로부터 예레미야에게 임한 말씀에 이르시되//The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,
(렘 18:2) 너는 일어나 토기장이의 집으로 내려가라 내가 거기에서 내 말을 네게 들려 주리라 하시기로//Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.
(렘 18:3) 내가 토기장이의 집으로 내려가서 본즉 그가 녹로로 일을 하는데//Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.
(렘 18:4) 진흙으로 만든 그릇이 토기장이의 손에서 터지매 그가 그것으로 자기 의견에 좋은 대로 다른 그릇을 만들더라//And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make {it}.
(렘 18:5) 그 때에 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하니라 이르시되//Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
(렘 18:6) 여호와의 말씀이니라 이스라엘 족속아 이 토기장이가 하는 것 같이 내가 능히 너희에게 행하지 못하겠느냐 이스라엘 족속아 진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라//O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay {is} in the potter's hand, so {are} ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.
(렘 18:7) 내가 어느 민족이나 국가를 뽑거나 부수거나 멸하려 할 때에//{At what} instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy {it};
(렘 18:8) 만일 내가 말한 그 민족이 그의 악에서 돌이키면 내가 그에게 내리기로 생각하였던 재앙에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키겠고//If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.
(렘 18:9) 내가 어느 민족이나 국가를 건설하거나 심으려 할 때에//And {at what} instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant {it};
(렘 18:10) 만일 그들이 나 보기에 악한 것을 행하여 내 목소리를 청종하지 아니하면 내가 그에게 유익하게 하리라고 한 복에 대하여 뜻을 돌이키리라//If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

Dan Les, a lifelong potter, creates decorative vessels and sculptures. His award-winning designs are inspired by the town in Romania where he lives. Having learned the craft from his father, he made this comment about his work: “[Clay needs to] ferment for a year, to have rain fall on it, to freeze and thaw out [so that] . . . you can shape it and feel through your hands that it is listening to you.”
평생 도예가로 살아온 댄 레스는 장식용 그릇과 조각품을 제작한다. 수상 경력에 빛나는 그의 디자인은 그가 살고 있는 루마니아의 마을에서 영감을 받았다. 아버지에게 도예를 배운 그는 자신의 작품에 대해 이렇게 말했다: “[점토는] 1년 동안 발효되고, 비를 맞고, 얼었다 녹았다를 반복해야만 ... 모양을 만들고 손을 통해 흙이 당신의 말을 듣는다는 것을 느낄 수 있습니다.”
What happens when clay “listens”? It’s willing to yield to the artisan’s touch. The prophet Jeremiah observed this when he visited a potter’s house. He watched as the craftsman struggled with a vessel and finally reshaped it into something new (Jeremiah 18:4). God said to Jeremiah, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand” (v. 6).
점토가 '말을 듣는'다면 어떤 일이 일어날까? 흙은 장인의 손길에 기꺼이 굴복한다. 예레미야 선지자는 도공의 집을 방문했을 때 이를 관찰했다. 그는 장인이 그릇을 가지고 고군분투하며 마침내 새로운 그릇으로 재탄생시키는 모습을 지켜보았다(예레미야 18:4). 하나님은 예레미야에게 “진흙이 토기장이의 손에 있음 같이 너희가 내 손에 있느니라”(6절)고 말씀하셨다.
God has the ability to build us up or bring us down, yet His ultimate purpose isn’t to overpower or destroy us (vv. 7-10). Rather, He’s like a skilled craftsman who can identify what isn’t working and reshape the same lump of clay into something beautiful and useful.
하나님은 우리를 세우시거나 무너뜨리실 수 있는 능력이 있지만, 그분의 궁극적인 목적은 우리를 제압하거나 파괴하는 것이 아니다(7-10절). 오히려 그분은 숙련된 장인과 같아서 무엇이 작동하지 않는지 파악하고 같은 진흙 덩어리를 아름답고 유용한 것으로 재구성할 수 있다.
Listening clay doesn’t have much to say about this. When prodded, it moves in the desired direction. When molded, it stays in place. The question for us is this: are we willing to “humble [ourselves] under God’s mighty hand” (1 Peter 5:6) so He can shape our lives into what He wants them to be? Jennifer Benson Schuldt
말을 듣는 진흙은 이에 대해 할 말이 많지 않다. 찌르면 원하는 방향으로 움직인다. 성형하면 제자리에 머물러 있다. 우리에게 던지는 질문은 바로 이것이다: 하나님께서 우리 삶을 그분이 원하시는 모습으로 빚으실 수 있도록 “하나님의 능하신 손 아래에서 기꺼이 [자신을] 낮출 것인가”(벧전 5:6) 하는 것이다.
