BLOOMING DESERTS(ISAIAH 35:1-7)
(사 35:1) 광야와 메마른 땅이 기뻐하며 사막이 백합화 같이 피어 즐거워하며//The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.
(사 35:2) 무성하게 피어 기쁜 노래로 즐거워하며 레바논의 영광과 갈멜과 사론의 아름다움을 얻을 것이라 그것들이 여호와의 영광 곧 우리 하나님의 아름다움을 보리로다//It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing: the glory of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the excellency of Carmel and Sharon, they shall see the glory of the Lord, {and} the excellency of our God.
(사 35:3) 너희는 약한 손을 강하게 하며 떨리는 무릎을 굳게 하며//Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.
(사 35:4) 겁내는 자들에게 이르기를 굳세어라, 두려워하지 말라, 보라 너희 하나님이 오사 보복하시며 갚아 주실 것이라 하나님이 오사 너희를 구하시리라 하라//Say to them {that are} of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come {with} vengeance, {even} God {with} a recompence; he will come and save you.
(사 35:5) 그 때에 맹인의 눈이 밝을 것이며 못 듣는 사람의 귀가 열릴 것이며//Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.
(사 35:6) 그 때에 저는 자는 사슴 같이 뛸 것이며 말 못하는 자의 혀는 노래하리니 이는 광야에서 물이 솟겠고 사막에서 시내가 흐를 것임이라//Then shall the lame {man} leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.
(사 35:7) 뜨거운 사막이 변하여 못이 될 것이며 메마른 땅이 변하여 원천이 될 것이며 승냥이의 눕던 곳에 풀과 갈대와 부들이 날 것이며//And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, {shall be} grass with reeds and rushes.

A century ago, lush forest covered roughly 40 percent of Ethiopia, but today it’s around 4 percent. Clearing acreage for crops while failing to protect the trees has led to an ecological crisis. The vast majority of the remaining small patches of green are protected by churches. For centuries, local Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido churches have nurtured these oases in the midst of the barren desert. If you look at aerial images, you see verdant islands surrounded by brown sand. Church leaders insist that watching over the trees is part of their obedience to God as stewards of His creation.
백년 전에는 울창한 숲이 에티오피아 국토의 약 40퍼센트를 차지했지만, 현재는 4퍼센트 정도밖에 되지 않는다. 나무를 보호하지 않고 경작지로 개간한 것이 생태학적 위기로 이어진 것이다. 남아있는 작은 수풀들의 대부분은 교회들이 보호하고 있다. 여러 세기 동안 에티오피아 정교회 테와히도 교회에 속한 여러 지역 교회들이 척박한 사막 한가운데서 이 오아시스들을 가꾸어 왔다. 항공 사진을 보면 갈색 모래 바다에 둘러싸인 푸른 섬들을 볼 수 있다. 교회 지도자들은 나무를 돌보는 것이 하나님이 창조하신 자연의 청지기로서 하나님께 순종하는 일이라고 주장한다.
The prophet Isaiah wrote to Israel, a people who lived in an arid land where bare desert and brutal droughts threatened. And Isaiah described the future God intended, where “the desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom” (ISAIAH 35:1). God intends to heal His people, but He intends to heal the earth too. He’ll “create new heavens and a new earth” (65:17). In God’s renewed world, “the desert will bloom with flowers” (35:2 NIRV).
이사야 선지자는 메마른 사막과 극심한 가뭄으로 위협받는 불모의 땅에 살고 있는 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님이 의도하신 미래에 대해 이렇게 표현했다. “광야와 메마른 땅이 기뻐하며, 사막이 백합화같이 피어 즐거워할 것이다”(이사야35:1,새번역). 하나님은 그의 백성들을 치유하려 하시고 이 땅도 치유하려고 하신다. 하나님은 “새 하늘과 새 땅을 창조하실”(65:17) 것이다. 하나님이 새롭게 만드신 세상에는 “사막에 꽃이 무성하게 필”(35:2, 새번역) 것이다.
God’s care for creation - including people - motivates us to care for it too. We can live in sync with His ultimate plan for a healed and whole world - being caretakers of what He’s made. We can join God in making all kinds of deserts bloom with life and beauty. WINN COLLIER
사람들을 포함한 모든 창조물을 보살피시는 하나님을 보면 우리도 하나님의 창조물을 돌볼 마음을 품게 된다. 우리는 하나님이 만드신 것을 돌봄으로써 치유된 온전한 세상을 만드시려는 하나님의 궁극적인 계획에 맞추어 살 수 있다. 모든 사막을 생명과 아름다움으로 꽃피게 하시는 하나님의 일에 우리도 동참할 수 있다.

Creator God, please show me how to help heal and restore what’s broken in the world.//창조주 하나님, 세상에서 부서진 것들을 치유하고 회복시키는 방법을 보여주소서. 땅을 다스리라고 우리에게 맡겨주신 하나님의 마음을 알고, 하나님이 창조하신 모든 생물들에게 가장 적합한 땅으로 유지하는 일에 우리 그리스도인들이 앞장서게 하소서.
