SMARTPHONE COMPASSION(EXODUS 34:1–8)
(출 34:1) 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 다듬어 만들라 네가 깨뜨린 처음 판에 있던 말을 내가 그 판에 쓰리니//And the Lord said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon {these} tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest.
(출 34:2) 아침까지 준비하고 아침에 시내 산에 올라와 산 꼭대기에서 내게 보이되//And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount.
(출 34:3) 아무도 너와 함께 오르지 말며 온 산에 아무도 나타나지 못하게 하고 양과 소도 산 앞에서 먹지 못하게 하라//And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.
(출 34:4) 모세가 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 깎아 만들고 아침에 일찍이 일어나 그 두 돌판을 손에 들고 여호와의 명령대로 시내 산에 올라가니//And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.
(출 34:5) 여호와께서 구름 가운데에 강림하사 그와 함께 거기 서서 여호와의 이름을 선포하실새//And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord.
(출 34:6) 여호와께서 그의 앞으로 지나시며 선포하시되 여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이라//And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
(출 34:7) 인자를 천대까지 베풀며 악과 과실과 죄를 용서하리라 그러나 벌을 면제하지는 아니하고 아버지의 악행을 자손 삼사 대까지 보응하리라//Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear {the guilty}; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth {generation}.
(출 34:8) 모세가 급히 땅에 엎드려 경배하며//And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
(요절: 출애굽기 34:6) 여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이라//The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. [EXODUS 34:6]
Was the driver late with your food? You can use your phone to give him a one-star rating. Did the shopkeeper treat you curtly? You can write her a critical review. While smartphones enable us to shop, keep up with friends, and more, they have also given us the power to publicly rate each other. And this can be a problem.
음식 배달이 늦게 되었나? 스마트폰으로 그 배달 기사에게 별 한 개의 점수를 줄 수 있다. 가게 주인이 불친절했나? 그 가게에 대해 비판적인 리뷰를 올릴 수 있다. 우리는 스마트폰으로 쇼핑을 하고 친구와 연락을 하는 등, 여러 가지 일을 할 수 있는 반면, 공개적으로 서로를 평가할 수도 있게 되었다. 그리고 이것이 문제가 되기도 한다.
Rating each other this way is problematic because judgments can be made without context. The driver gets rated poorly for a late delivery due to circumstances out of his control. The shopkeeper gets a negative review when she’d been up all night with a sick child. How can we avoid rating others unfairly like this?
이런 식으로 서로를 평가하는 것은 전후 사정을 알지 못하고 판단하도록 할 수 있기 때문에 문제의 소지가 있다. 배달 기사는 자신이 통제할 수 없는 상황으로 배달이 늦어져도 낮은 점수를 받게 된다. 가게 주인은 아픈 자녀를 돌보느라 한잠도 못 자고 나왔다가 부정적인 리뷰를 받을 수 있다. 이렇게 다른 사람을 부당하게 평가하지 않으려면 어떻게 해야 할까?
By imitating God’s character. In Exodus 34:6–7, God describes Himself as “compassionate and gracious” — meaning He wouldn’t judge our failures without context; “slow to anger” — meaning He wouldn’t post a negative review after one bad experience; “abounding in love” — meaning His correctives are for our good, not to get revenge; and “forgiving [of] sin” — meaning our lives don’t have to be defined by our one-star days. Since God’s character is to be the basis of ours (MATTHEW 6:33), we can avoid the harshness smartphones enable by using ours as He would.
그것은 하나님의 성품을 닮음으로써 가능하다. 출애굽기 34:6-7 에서 하나님은 자신을 이렇게 묘사하신다. “자비롭고 은혜로움” – 상황을 무시하고 우리 실수를 판단하지 않으시는 분. “노하기를 더디 하심” – 한번 안 좋은 경험으로 부정적인 리뷰를 올리지 않으시는 분. “인자가 많으심” – 앙갚음이 아니라 우리의 유익을 위해 벌을 주시는 분. “죄를 용서하심” – 한번 낮은 점수 받은 것을 가지고 우리 삶 전체를 평가하지 않으시는 분. 이렇게 하나님의 성품이 우리 성품의 바탕을 이루면(마태복음 6:33), 우리는 하나님이 사용하시듯 스마트폰을 사용하게 됨으로써 가혹한 말들을 피할 수 있다.
