LIFE AND DEATH IN CHRIST(JOHN 12:20-27)
(요 12:20) 명절에 예배하러 올라온 사람 중에 헬라인 몇이 있는데//And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
(요 12:21) 그들이 갈릴리 벳새다 사람 빌립에게 가서 청하여 이르되 선생이여 우리가 예수를 뵈옵고자 하나이다 하니//The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
(요 12:22) 빌립이 안드레에게 가서 말하고 안드레와 빌립이 예수께 가서 여쭈니//Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus.
(요 12:23) 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다//And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
(요 12:24) 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라//Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.
(요 12:25) 자기의 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버릴 것이요 이 세상에서 자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라//He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
(요 12:26) 사람이 나를 섬기려면 나를 따르라 나 있는 곳에 나를 섬기는 자도 거기 있으리니 사람이 나를 섬기면 내 아버지께서 그를 귀히 여기시리라//If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will {my} Father honour.
(요 12:27) 지금 내 마음이 괴로우니 무슨 말을 하리요 아버지여 나를 구원하여 이 때를 면하게 하여 주옵소서 그러나 내가 이를 위하여 이 때에 왔나이다//Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
(요절: 요한복음 12:24) 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라//Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. [JOHN 12:24]
Facing a firing squad, Fyodor Dostoevsky quietly counted the last moments of his life. Dostoevsky, a believer in Jesus, is considered one of the greatest writers in all of literature. His monumental novel The Brothers Karamazov explored themes about God, life, and death. It was said of Dostoevsky, “He spoke about Christ ecstatically.” The rifles raised. “Ready! . . . Aim . . . .”
총살형을 집행하는 병사들 앞에서 표도르 도스토예프스키는 생의 마지막 순간을 조용히 기다리고 있었다. 예수를 믿은 도스토예프스키는 모든 문학에서 가장 위대한 작가의 한 사람으로 평가받는다. 그의 기념비적 소설 ‘카라마조프가의 형제들’은 하나님과 삶과 죽음의 주제를 깊이 다루었다. “그가 예수님에 대해 말할 때에는 황홀해 했다”고 전해지는 도스토예프스키였다. 이제 병사들이 총을 들었다. “준비!…조준…”
Jesus, alluding to His own execution, speaks to His disciples and to us of the eternal value of life and death when He said, “The hour has come” (JOHN 12:23). The image is a seed (our life), which produces a great harvest through its own sacrifice (V. 24). Jesus tells us not to love this life too much, for it is those who are willing to sacrifice this present life who will find “eternal life” (V. 25).
예수님은 자신의 죽음을 가리켜 “때가 왔도다”(요한복음 12:23)라고 말씀하시며, 제자들과 그리고 우리에게 삶과 죽음의 영원한 가치에 대해 말씀하신다. 예수님은 비유로 한 알의 씨앗(우리 생명)이 떨어져 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다고 하셨다(24절). 예수님은 우리에게 지금의 삶을 너무 사랑하지 말라 하시며, 현세의 삶을 기꺼이 희생하는 사람이 “영생”(25절)을 얻을 것이라 하셨다.
Being His disciple requires sacrifice. But we find our hope in His words, “My Father will honor the one who serves me” (V. 26).
예수님의 제자가 되려면 희생이 필요하다. 그러나 “나를 섬기면 내 아버지께서 그를 귀히 여기시리라”(26절)고 하신 말씀에 우리의 희망이 있다.
Fyodor looked death in the face. But a letter from the Czar was delivered at the last second. A reprieve. Dostoevsky’s life was spared, yet this experience would infuse all his later works. Indeed, the epigraph of The Brothers Karamazov is this verse, John 12:24: “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. 도스토예프스키는 죽음 앞에 섰다. 그러나 그 마지막 순간에 러시아 황제의 편지가 도착했다. 집행유예였다. 도스토예프스키는 이렇게 해서 자신의 목숨을 건졌고, 이 경험은 이후 그의 작품들에 깊은 영향을 주게 되었다. 실제로 ‘카라마조프가의 형제들’ 책의 후기는 바로 요한복음 12장 24절이다: “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많는 열매를 맺느니라.”

Father God, please help me accept the challenge of discipleship and understand the meaning of life through death.//하나님 아버지, 제자의 삶에 따르는 희생을 받아들이게 하시고, 죽음으로써 산다는 것의 의미를 이해할 수 있도록 도와주소서. 죄 없으신 예수님이 아버지의 뜻에 따라 기꺼이 십자가를 받아들인 그 믿음을 나도 우리 모든 기독교인들이 받아들이게 하소서. 우리의 자아가 예수님처럼 십자가에 못 박히게 하소서. 영원히 살아있는 우리가 이 세상에서는 죽은 자로 살게 하소서.
