HEADLONG INTO DANGER(PROVERBS 27:8–12)
(잠 27:8) 고향을 떠나 유리하는 사람은 보금자리를 떠나 떠도는 새와 같으니라//As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so {is} a man that wandereth from his place.
(잠 27:9) 기름과 향이 사람의 마음을 즐겁게 하나니 친구의 충성된 권고가 이와 같이 아름다우니라//Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so {doth} the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.
(잠 27:10) 네 친구와 네 아비의 친구를 버리지 말며 네 환난 날에 형제의 집에 들어가지 말지어다 가까운 이웃이 먼 형제보다 나으니라//Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: {for} better {is} a neighbour {that is} near than a brother far off.
(잠 27:11) 내 아들아 지혜를 얻고 내 마음을 기쁘게 하라 그리하면 나를 비방하는 자에게 내가 대답할 수 있으리라//My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.
(잠 27:12) 슬기로운 자는 재앙을 보면 숨어 피하여도 어리석은 자들은 나가다가 해를 받느니라//A prudent {man} foreseeth the evil, {and} hideth himself; {but} the simple pass on, {and} are punished.

In 1892, a resident with cholera accidentally transmitted the disease via the Elbe River to Hamburg, Germany’s entire water supply. Within weeks, ten thousand citizens died. Eight years earlier, German microbiologist Robert Koch had made a discovery: cholera was waterborne. Koch’s revelation prodded officials in large European cities to invest in filtration systems to protect their water. Hamburg authorities, however, had done nothing. Citing costs and alleging dubious science, they’d ignored clear warnings while their city careened toward catastrophe.
1892년 콜레라에 감염된 한 주민의 실수로 엘베 강을 통해 독일 함부르크 상수도 전체가 오염되어, 몇 주 만에 만 명의 시민이 사망했다. 그보다 8년 전에 독일의 미생물학자 로베르트 코흐는 콜레라가 수인성 전염병인 것을 발견했다. 코흐의 발견으로 유럽의 여러 대도시의 당국자들은 물을 보호하기 위해 여과 시스템을 설치했지만, 함부르크 당국은 아무 일도 하지 않았다. 그들이 비용 문제를 거론하며 또 불확실한 과학이라고 주장하면서 그 분명한 경고를 무시하는 사이, 도시는 재앙을 향해 달려가고 있었다.
The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about those of us who see trouble yet refuse to act. “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions” (27:12 NLT). When God helps us see danger ahead, it’s common sense to take action to address the danger. We wisely change course. Or we ready ourselves with appropriate precautions that He provides. But we do something. To do nothing is sheer lunacy. We can all fail to miss the warning signs, however, and careen toward disaster. “The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences” (V. 12 NLT).
잠언에는 문제를 보고도 아무런 조치를 취하지 않는 사람들에 대한 말씀이 많이 있다. “슬기로운 자는 재앙을 보면 숨어 피한다”(27:12)고 했다. 위험이 다가온다는 것을 하나님이 보여주실 때 그에 대한 조치를 취하는 것은 상식이다. 우리는 현명하게 진로를 변경하거나 하나님이 주시는 적절한 예방책으로 스스로를 준비하면서, 하여간 ‘무언가’를 한다. 아무것도 안 하는 것은 정말 미친 짓이다. 그러나 우리는 경고 신호를 보지 못해서 재난을 향해 달려갈 수 있다. “어리석은 사람은 그대로 나아가다가 어려움을 당한다”(12절, 현대인의 성경).
In Scripture and in the life of Jesus, God shows us the path to follow and warns us of trouble we’ll surely face. If we’re foolish, we’ll barrel ahead, headlong into danger. Instead, as He leads us by His grace, may we heed His wisdom and change course. WINN COLLIER
성경말씀과 예수님의 삶을 통해 하나님은 우리가 따라야 할 길을 보여주시고 반드시 마주치게 될 문제에 대해 경고하신다. 우리가 어리석으면 위험을 향해 급하게 달려갈 것이다. 그러나 하나님께서 은혜로 우리를 이끄셔서, 우리 모두 그분의 지혜에 주의를 기울여 방향을 바꾸게 되기를 소원한다.

Dear God, please help me listen to You and turn away from danger.//사랑하는 하나님, 주님 말씀을 잘 들어 위험을 피할 수 있도록 도와주소서. 말씀을 통하여, 기도를 통하여, 교회를 통하여 주시는 하나님의 경고를 무시하지 않게 하시고 성령으로 무장하여 대비하게 하소서. 하나님의 경고를 무시하는 미련한 자의 길을 따라가지 않게 하소서. 하나님의 말씀이 내 귀에 들리는 은혜가 충만하게 하소서.
