IN THE GARDEN(GENESIS 2:8–9; 3:16–19)
(창 2:8) 여호와 하나님이 동방의 에덴에 동산을 창설하시고 그 지으신 사람을 거기 두시니라//And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
(창 2:9) 여호와 하나님이 그 땅에서 보기에 아름답고 먹기에 좋은 나무가 나게 하시니 동산 가운데에는 생명 나무와 선악을 알게 하는 나무도 있더라//And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
(창 3:16) 또 여자에게 이르시되 내가 네게 임신하는 고통을 크게 더하리니 네가 수고하고 자식을 낳을 것이며 너는 남편을 원하고 남편은 너를 다스릴 것이니라 하시고//Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire {shall be} to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
(창 3:17) 아담에게 이르시되 네가 네 아내의 말을 듣고 내가 네게 먹지 말라 한 나무의 열매를 먹었은즉 땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고 너는 네 평생에 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라//And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed {is} the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat {of} it all the days of thy life;
(창 3:18) 땅이 네게 가시덤불과 엉겅퀴를 낼 것이라 네가 먹을 것은 밭의 채소인즉//Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
(창 3:19) 네가 흙으로 돌아갈 때까지 얼굴에 땀을 흘려야 먹을 것을 먹으리니 네가 그것에서 취함을 입었음이라 너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라 하시니라//In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou {art}, and unto dust shalt thou return.

My dad loved being outdoors in God’s creation camping, fishing, and rock-hunting. He also enjoyed working in his yard and garden. But it took lots of work! He spent hours pruning, hoeing, planting seeds or flowers, pulling weeds, mowing the lawn, and watering the yard and garden. The results were worth it - a landscaped lawn, tasty tomatoes, and beautiful peace roses. Every year he pruned the roses close to the ground, and every year they grew back - filling the senses with their fragrance and beauty.
아버지는 캠핑이나 낚시, 돌 수집 같은 것을 하시며 하나님이 만드신 자연에서 지내는 것을 좋아하셨다. 그리고 뒤뜰이나 정원에서 일하는 것도 즐기셨다. 그런데 그러기 위해서는 정말 많은 일을 해야 했다! 아버지는 많은 시간을 들여 가지치기, 괭이질, 씨앗이나 꽃 심기, 잡초 뽑기, 잔디 깎기, 뜰과 정원에 물주기를 하셨다. 그 결과 잘 정돈된 잔디와 맛있는 토마토, 아름다운 장미를 보는 보람도 있었다. 해마다 거의 밑동만 남기고 잘라준 장미는 다시 자라나 향기와 아름다움으로 우리의 감각을 만족시켜 주었다.
In Genesis, we read of the garden of Eden where Adam and Eve lived, thrived, and walked with God. There, God “made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food” (GENESIS 2:9). I imagine that perfect garden also included beautiful, sweet-smelling flowers - perhaps even roses minus the thorns!
우리는 창세기에서 아담과 하와가 살면서 번성하며 하나님과 함께 했던 에덴동산에 대해 읽어서 안다. 거기서 하나님은 “보기에 아름답고 먹기에 좋은 열매를 맺는 온갖 나무를 땅에서 자라게 하셨다”(창세기 2:9, 새번역). 그 완벽한 정원에는 아름답고 향기로운 꽃들도 있고, 아마 가시 없는 장미도 있지 않았을까 상상해 본다!
After Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God, they were expelled from the garden and needed to plant and care for their own gardens, which meant breaking up hard ground, battling with thorns, and other challenges (3:17–19, 23–24). Yet God continued to provide for them (V. 21). And He didn’t leave humanity without the beauty of creation to draw us to Him (ROMANS 1:20). The flowers in the garden remind us of God’s continued love and promise of a renewed creation - symbols of hope and comfort! ALYSON KIEDA
그러나 하나님께 반항한 아담과 하와는 그 동산에서 쫓겨나, 자신들의 동산에서 심고 가꾸면서 단단한 땅을 파고 가시와 싸우며 여러 어려움을 겪어야 했다(3:17-19, 23-24). 그럼에도 하나님은 여전히 그들을 돌보아 주셨다(21절). 그리고 하나님은 창조의 아름다움을 인류에게 그대로 남겨두어 인간의 마음이 하나님께로 향하게 하셨다(로마서 1:20). 하나님의 변함없는 사랑과 새로운 창조의 약속을 기억나게 해주는 정원의 꽃들은 희망과 위로의 상징이다!

Dear God, thank You for the many reminders of You in Your creation. Thank You for beauty among thorns.//사랑하는 하나님, 하나님이 지으신 창조물들을 보며 하나님을 생각하게 하시니 감사합니다. 가시 속에서도 아름다움을 보게 하시니 감사합니다. 징벌 가운데도 사랑을 남겨두신 주님께 감사합니다. 홍수로 뒤덮은 세상에도 아름다운 자연을 남겨두신 것을 감사합니다. 보이는 자연에서 하나님을 만날 수 있는 흔적을 보여주시는 것을 감사합니다. 내가 만난 하나님을 널리 전하게 하소서.
