Life’s Pilgrimage(Hebrews 11:13-16)
(히 11:13) 이 사람들은 다 믿음을 따라 죽었으며 약속을 받지 못하였으되 그것들을 멀리서 보고 환영하며 또 땅에서는 외국인과 나그네임을 증언하였으니//These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of {them}, and embraced {them}, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
(히 11:14) 그들이 이같이 말하는 것은 자기들이 본향 찾는 자임을 나타냄이라//For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
(히 11:15) 그들이 나온 바 본향을 생각하였더라면 돌아갈 기회가 있었으려니와//And truly, if they had been mindful of that {country} from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
(히 11:16) 그들이 이제는 더 나은 본향을 사모하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라 이러므로 하나님이 그들의 하나님이라 일컬음 받으심을 부끄러워하지 아니하시고 그들을 위하여 한 성을 예비하셨느니라//But now they desire a better {country}, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
(요절: 히브리서 11:16) 그들이 이제는 더 나은 본향을 사모하니 곧 하늘에 있는 것이라//Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.[Hebrews 11:16]
More than two hundred million people from a variety of faiths undertake a pilgrimage each year. For many throughout the ages, a pilgrim’s task has been to journey to a sacred place to receive some kind of blessing. It’s been all about reaching the temple, cathedral, shrine, or other destination where a blessing can be received.
매년 다양한 종교를 가진 2억 명 이상의 사람들이 성지순례를 떠난다. 오랜 세월 동안 많은 사람들에게 순례자의 임무는 어떤 복을 받기 위해 신성한 장소로 여행하는 것이었다. 사원, 성당, 신사 또는 복을 받을 수 있는 다른 목적지에 도착하는 것이 순례의 전부였다.
Britain’s Celtic Christians, however, saw pilgrimage differently. They set out directionless into the wild or let their boats drift wherever the oceans took them—pilgrimage for them being about trusting God in unfamiliar territory. Any blessing was found not at the destination but along the journey.
하지만 영국의 켈트족 기독교인들은 성지 순례를 다르게 생각했다. 그들은 방향 없이 야생으로 떠나거나 배를 타고 바다가 이끄는 대로 표류했는데, 이들에게 순례는 낯선 땅에서 신을 신뢰하는 것이었다. 모든 복은 목적지가 아니라 여정 중에 찾았다.
Hebrews 11 was an important passage for the Celts. Since the life in Christ is about leaving the world’s ways behind and trekking like foreigners to the city of God (vv. 13-16), a pilgrimage echoed their life’s journey. By trusting God to provide along their difficult, untrodden path, the pilgrim grew the kind of faith lived by the heroes of old (vv. 1-12).
히브리서 11장은 켈트족에게 중요한 구절이었다. 그리스도 안에서의 삶은 세상의 길을 뒤로하고 나그네처럼 하나님의 도성(13~16절)으로 가는 것이므로, 순례는 그들의 인생 여정을 반영했다. 순례자는 아무도 가보지 않은 험난한 길을 인도해 주실 하나님을 신뢰함으로써 옛 영웅들이 살았던 믿음을 키웠다(1-12절).
What a lesson to learn, whether we physically trek or not: for those who have trusted Jesus, life is a pilgrimage to God’s heavenly country, full of dark forests, dead ends, and trials. 예수님을 믿은 사람들에게 인생은 어두운 숲과 막다른 골목, 시련으로 가득한 하나님의 나라로 향하는 순례길이라는 교훈은 우리가 육체적으로 트레킹을 하든 하지 않든 배울 수 있는 교훈이다. 그 여정 속에서 하나님의 공급을 경험하는 복을 놓치지 않기를 바란다.
How can you be open today to receiving God’s gifts along life’s path? How can you remind yourself that this world, as it is now, isn’t your real home?
인생의 여정에서 하나님의 선물을 받기 위해 오늘 어떻게 마음을 열 수 있을까요? 지금 이 세상이 여러분의 진짜 집이 아님을 어떻게 상기시킬 수 있을까요?
Dear God, thank You for showing me that life’s trials are opportunities for me to grow a deeper faith in You.//사랑의 하나님, 인생의 시련이 주님을 더 깊이 믿게 되는 기회라는 것을 보여 주셔서 감사합니다. 시련을 통해 주님이 주시고자 하는 교훈을 바로 알아볼 수 있는 눈을 허락하소서. 길게 돌아가지 않고 바로 깨달아 항상 주와 동행하는 삶을 살아가게 하소서.
