STAYING THE COURSE IN CHRIST(1 SAMUEL 28:3-10)
(삼상 28:3) 사무엘이 죽었으므로 온 이스라엘이 그를 두고 슬피 울며 그의 고향 라마에 장사하였고 사울은 신접한 자와 박수를 그 땅에서 쫓아내었더라//Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
(삼상 28:4) 블레셋 사람들이 모여 수넴에 이르러 진 치매 사울이 온 이스라엘을 모아 길보아에 진 쳤더니//And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.
(삼상 28:5) 사울이 블레셋 사람들의 군대를 보고 두려워서 그의 마음이 크게 떨린지라//And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.
(삼상 28:6) 사울이 여호와께 묻자오되 여호와께서 꿈으로도, 우림으로도, 선지자로도 그에게 대답하지 아니하시므로//And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
(삼상 28:7) 사울이 그의 신하들에게 이르되 나를 위하여 신접한 여인을 찾으라 내가 그리로 가서 그에게 물으리라 하니 그의 신하들이 그에게 이르되 보소서 엔돌에 신접한 여인이 있나이다//Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, {there is} a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.
(삼상 28:8) 사울이 다른 옷을 입어 변장하고 두 사람과 함께 갈새 그들이 밤에 그 여인에게 이르러서는 사울이 이르되 청하노니 나를 위하여 신접한 술법으로 내가 네게 말하는 사람을 불러 올리라 하니//And Saul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me {him} up, whom I shall name unto thee.
(삼상 28:9) 여인이 그에게 이르되 네가 사울이 행한 일 곧 그가 신접한 자와 박수를 이 땅에서 멸절시켰음을 아나니 네가 어찌하여 내 생명에 올무를 놓아 나를 죽게 하려느냐 하는지라//And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
(삼상 28:10) 사울이 여호와의 이름으로 그에게 맹세하여 이르되 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네가 이 일로는 벌을 당하지 아니하리라 하니//And Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, {As} the Lord liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
(요절: 마태복음 5:37) 오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라//All you need to say is simply “Yes” or “No”; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. [MATTHEW 5:37]
As Gandalf the Grey confronted Saruman the White, it became clear that the latter had turned from what he was supposed to be doing - helping to protect Middle - earth from the power of the evil being Sauron. What’s more, Saruman had allied with Sauron! In this scene from the film The Fellowship of the Ring, based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic work, the two former friends then engage in an epic good-versus-evil battle. If only Saruman had stayed the course and done what he knew was right!
회색의 간달프가 백색의 사루만과 맞서게 되었을 때, 사루만이 악마 사우론의 힘으로부터 중간계를 보호해야 할 그의 임무를 배반한 것이 분명해졌다. 게다가 사루만은 사우론과 동맹을 맺기까지 했다! J. R. R. 톨킨의 고전 작품을 바탕으로 한 영화 ‘반지 원정대’의 그 장면에서 전에 친구였던 두 사람은 웅장한 선과 악의 싸움을 벌인다. 사루만이 끝까지 한 길을 가서 자신이 옳다고 생각한 일을 했더라면 어땠을까!
King Saul also had trouble staying the course. In one account, he rightly “expelled the mediums and spiritists from [Israel]” (1 SAMUEL 28:3). Good move, for God had declared that dabbling in the occult was “detestable” (DEUTERONOMY 18:9-12). But when God didn’t answer the king’s plea - due to his prior failures - for how to deal with a massive Philistine army, Saul caved: “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her” (1 SAMUEL 28:7). Talk about a complete reversal! Saul failed once more as he went against his own decree - what he knew was right.
사울 왕도 끝까지 한 길을 가지 못했다. 한 기록에 따르면, 그는 올바르게 “(이스라엘)에서 신접한 자와 박수를 쫓아내었다”(사무엘상 28:3). 재미 삼아 주술을 하는 것을 하나님이 “가증하다”고 선언하셨기 때문에 (신명기 18:9-12) 그렇게 한 것은 잘한 일이었다. 그러나 블레셋 대군을 물리칠 방법을 하나님께 구하였으나 그의 지난 날의 잘못 때문에 하나님이 응답하시지 않자, 사울은 할 수 없이 “나를 위하여 신접한 여인을 찾으라 내가 그리로 가서 그에게 물으리라”(사무엘상 28:7)라고 하였다. 완전한 반전이 아닐수 없다! 사울은 자신이 옳다고 생각하고 있는 자신의 신의를 어기면서 또 다시 실패하고 말았다.
A millennium later, Jesus said to His disciples, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” (MATTHEW 5:37). In other words, if we’ve committed ourselves to obeying Christ, it’s vital that we keep our oaths and be truthful. Let’s stay the course in doing those things as God helps us. TOM FELTEN
천 년 후, 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀하셨다. “오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라”(마태복음 5:37). 다시 말해, 우리가 그리스도께 순종하기로 결심했다면 우리의 맹세를 지키고 진실된 모습으로 사는 것이 정말 중요하다. 하나님의 도우심으로, 그런 일들을 하면서 한 길을 계속 가도록 하자.

Dear Jesus, please help me stay the course in following Your ways.//사랑하는 예수님, 주님의 길을 따르면서 끝까지 한 길을 갈 수 있도록 도와주소서. 인간적인 생각이 믿음을 앞질러서 옛적 죄의 길로 다시 돌아가지 않게 하소서. 주님이 보여주신 선명한 길을 한결같이 걸어가게 하소서.
