GOD’S COMFORTING COMMITMENT(JOSHUA 1:1-9)
(수 1:1) 여호와의 종 모세가 죽은 후에 여호와께서 모세의 수종자 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 말씀하여 이르시되//Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying,
(수 1:2) 내 종 모세가 죽었으니 이제 너는 이 모든 백성과 더불어 일어나 이 요단을 건너 내가 그들 곧 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 그 땅으로 가라//Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, {even} to the children of Israel.
(수 1:3) 내가 모세에게 말한 바와 같이 너희 발바닥으로 밟는 곳은 모두 내가 너희에게 주었노니//Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
(수 1:4) 곧 광야와 이 레바논에서부터 큰 강 곧 유브라데 강까지 헷 족속의 온 땅과 또 해 지는 쪽 대해까지 너희의 영토가 되리라//From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
(수 1:5) 네 평생에 너를 능히 대적할 자가 없으리니 내가 모세와 함께 있었던 것 같이 너와 함께 있을 것임이니라 내가 너를 떠나지 아니하며 버리지 아니하리니//There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, {so} I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
(수 1:6) 강하고 담대하라 너는 내가 그들의 조상에게 맹세하여 그들에게 주리라 한 땅을 이 백성에게 차지하게 하리라//Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
(수 1:7) 오직 강하고 극히 담대하여 나의 종 모세가 네게 명령한 그 율법을 다 지켜 행하고 우로나 좌로나 치우치지 말라 그리하면 어디로 가든지 형통하리니//Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it {to} the right hand or {to} the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
(수 1:8) 이 율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 말게 하며 주야로 그것을 묵상하여 그 안에 기록된 대로 다 지켜 행하라 그리하면 네 길이 평탄하게 될 것이며 네가 형통하리라//This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
(수 1:9) 내가 네게 명령한 것이 아니냐 강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 어디로 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라 하시니라//Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God {is} with thee whithersoever thou goest.

Years ago, our family visited Four Corners, the only place in the United States where four states meet at one location. My husband stood in the section marked Arizona. Our oldest son, A.J., hopped into Utah. Our youngest son, Xavier, held my hand as we stepped into Colorado. When I scooted into New Mexico, Xavier said, “Mom, I can’t believe you left me in Colorado!” We were together and apart as our laughter was heard in four different states. Now that our grown sons have left home, I have a deeper appreciation of God’s promise to be near all His people wherever they go.
여러 해 전 우리 가족은 미국에서 네 개의 주가 한 곳에서 만나는 유일한 장소인 포코너스(네 모퉁이)에 가보았다. 남편은 아리조나주로 표시된 쪽에 섰고, 큰 아들 에이 제이는 유타주로 건너갔다. 작은 아들 제비어는 내 손을 잡고 콜로라도주에 함께 발을 디뎠다. 내가 뉴멕시코주로 건너가자 제비어는 “엄마가 날 콜로라도에 버려두고 가다니!” 라고 소리쳤다. 우리는 함께 있었지만 동시에 네 개의 다른 주에서 들려오는 웃음 소리를 들었다. 장성한 아들들이 집을 떠난 지금, 나는 그들이 어디에 있든지 하나님께서 그의 ‘모든’ 백성들 가까이 계시겠다고 하신 그분의 약속에 더 깊이 감사하고 있다.
After Moses died, God called Joshua into leadership and guaran-teed His presence as He expanded the Israelite’s territory (JOSHUA 1:1-4). God said, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (V. 5). Knowing that Joshua would struggle with doubt and fear as the new leader of His people, God built a foundation of hope on these words: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (V. 9).
모세가 죽은 뒤 하나님은 여호수아를 지도자로 부르시면서 이스라엘 영토를 넓힐 때(여호수아 1:1-4) 항상 함께 하겠다고 약속하셨다. 하나님은 “모세와 함께 있었던 것 같이 너와 함께 있을 것임이니라 내가 너를 떠나지 아니하며 버리지 아니하리라”(5절)고 말씀하셨다. 새로 하나님의 백성을 이끌 지도자가 된 여호수아가 의심과 두려움으로 씨름할 것을 아신 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하시며 소망을 갖게 하셨다. “내가 네게 명령한 것이 아니냐 강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 어디로 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라”(9절).
No matter where God leads us or our loved ones, even through difficult times, His most comforting commitment assures us that He’s always present. XOCHITL DIXON
하나님이 우리와 우리가 사랑하는 사람들을 어디로 인도하시든지, 그리고 아무리 어려운 때라도 가장 큰 위로를 주는 하나님의 이 언약이 하나님이 우리와 ‘언제나’ 함께 하신다는 사실을 확인시켜 준다.
