LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM(MATTHEW 2:1-11)
(마 2:1) 헤롯 왕 때에 예수께서 유대 베들레헴에서 나시매 동방으로부터 박사들이 예루살렘에 이르러 말하되//Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
(마 2:2) 유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시냐 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라 하니//Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
(마 2:3) 헤롯 왕과 온 예루살렘이 듣고 소동한지라//When Herod the king had heard {these things}, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
(마 2:4) 왕이 모든 대제사장과 백성의 서기관들을 모아 그리스도가 어디서 나겠느냐 물으니//And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
(마 2:5) 이르되 유대 베들레헴이오니 이는 선지자로 이렇게 기록된 바//And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
(마 2:6) 또 유대 땅 베들레헴아 너는 유대 고을 중에서 가장 작지 아니하도다 네게서 한 다스리는 자가 나와서 내 백성 이스라엘의 목자가 되리라 하였음이니이다//And thou Bethlehem, {in} the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
(마 2:7) 이에 헤롯이 가만히 박사들을 불러 별이 나타난 때를 자세히 묻고//Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
(마 2:8) 베들레헴으로 보내며 이르되 가서 아기에 대하여 자세히 알아보고 찾거든 내게 고하여 나도 가서 그에게 경배하게 하라//And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found {him}, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
(마 2:9) 박사들이 왕의 말을 듣고 갈새 동방에서 보던 그 별이 문득 앞서 인도하여 가다가 아기 있는 곳 위에 머물러 서 있는지라//When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
(마 2:10) 그들이 별을 보고 매우 크게 기뻐하고 기뻐하더라//When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
(마 2:11) 집에 들어가 아기와 그의 어머니 마리아가 함께 있는 것을 보고 엎드려 아기께 경배하고 보배합을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 드리니라//And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
(요절: 마태복음 2:6) 베들레헴아… 네게서 한 다스리는 자가 나와서 내 백성 이스라엘의 목자가 되리라//Bethlehem, … out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel. [MATTHEW 2:6]
Phillips Brooks wrote the lyrics to the beloved carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” after visiting Bethlehem. Brooks, pastor of a church in the United States, was so moved by his experience that he wrote this to his Sunday school students: “I remember . . . on Christmas Eve, when I was standing in the old church at Bethlehem, close to the spot where Jesus was born, when the whole church was ringing hour after hour with the splendid hymns of praise to God, how again and again it seemed as if I could hear voices that I knew well, telling each other of the ‘Wonderful Night’ of the Savior’s birth.”
필립 브룩스는 베들레헴을 방문한 후 많은 이들에게 사랑받는 “오 베들레헴 작은 골”이라는 찬송가의 가사를 썼다. 미국의 한 교회 목사였던 그는 베들레헴에 가서 보고 받은 감동을 주일학교 학생들에게 이렇게 전했다. “크리스마스 이브에, 나는 예수님이 태어나신 곳 근처에 있는 베들레헴의 오래된 교회 안에 서 있었는데, 한참 동안 하나님을 찬양하는 멋진 찬송가가 온 교회에 울려 퍼졌어요. 그때 구세주 탄생의 ‘놀라운 밤’을 함께 노래하는 익숙한 목소리가 반복해서 들리는 듯 했답니다.”
In 1868, Brooks put his thoughts into a poem, and his church organist set it to music. The song spoke stillness and peace into the unsettling aftermath of the American Civil War: “O little town of Bethlehem / How still we see thee lie! / . . . The hopes and fears of all the years / Are met in thee tonight.”
1868년에 브룩스는 이 내용을 시로 정리했고, 교회의 오르간 연주자가 곡을 붙였다. 이 노래는 미국 남북전쟁 직후의 혼란스러운 시기에 고요함과 평안의 메시지가 되었다. “오 베들레헴의 작은 골 / 너 잠들었느냐 / … 온 하늘 두루 비춘 줄 / 너 어찌 모르나.”
Matthew wrote of our Savior’s birth in Bethlehem in Matthew 2. When the “Magi from the east” (V. 1) followed the star to Bethlehem (SEE MICAH 5:2), “they were overjoyed” to find Jesus (MATTHEW 2:10).
마태복음 2장에서 마태는 베들레헴에서 나신 구세주에 대해 기록했다. “동방 박사들”(1절)은 별을 따라 베들레헴에 왔고(미가 5:2 참조), 예수님을 찾게 되어 “크게 기뻐했다”(마태복음 2:10).
Today, as we celebrate Epiphany, we too need the glorious news of our Savior’s birth. As the hymn reminds us, He came to “cast out our sin and enter in” and “be born in us.” In Him, we find peace. ALYSON KIEDA
구세주의 탄생을 기념하면서, 구세주 탄생의 영광스러운 소식이 우리에게도 필요하다. “내 죄를 모두 사하고, 늘 함께하시며, 늘 함께 하소서” 라는 찬송가 가사처럼 우리는 예수님 안에서 평화를 얻을 수 있다.
