SERVING GOD FOR GOOD(MATTHEW 20:20-28)
(마 20:20) 그 때에 세베대의 아들의 어머니가 그 아들들을 데리고 예수께 와서 절하며 무엇을 구하니//Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping {him}, and desiring a certain thing of him.
(마 20:21) 예수께서 이르시되 무엇을 원하느냐 이르되 나의 이 두 아들을 주의 나라에서 하나는 주의 우편에, 하나는 주의 좌편에 앉게 명하소서//And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
(마 20:22) 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 너희는 너희가 구하는 것을 알지 못하는도다 내가 마시려는 잔을 너희가 마실 수 있느냐 그들이 말하되 할 수 있나이다//But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
(마 20:23) 이르시되 너희가 과연 내 잔을 마시려니와 내 좌우편에 앉는 것은 내가 주는 것이 아니라 내 아버지께서 누구를 위하여 예비하셨든지 그들이 얻을 것이니라//And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but {it shall be given to them} for whom it is prepared of my Father.
(마 20:24) 열 제자가 듣고 그 두 형제에 대하여 분히 여기거늘//And when the ten heard {it}, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
(마 20:25) 예수께서 제자들을 불러다가 이르시되 이방인의 집권자들이 그들을 임의로 주관하고 그 고관들이 그들에게 권세를 부리는 줄을 너희가 알거니와//But Jesus called them {unto him}, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
(마 20:26) 너희 중에는 그렇지 않아야 하나니 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고//But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
(마 20:27) 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 너희의 종이 되어야 하리라//And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
(마 20:28) 인자가 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라//Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
(요절: 마태복음 20:26) 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고//Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant. [MATTHEW 20:26]
Brad moved to a new city and quickly found a church where he could worship. He went to services for a few weeks, and then one Sunday he talked to the pastor afterward about his desire to serve in any way needed. He said, “I just want to ‘reach for the broom.’ ” He started by helping set up chairs for the services and cleaning the restrooms. The church family found out later that Brad’s giftedness was in teaching, but he was willing to do anything.
새 도시로 이사한 브래드는 예배드릴 수 있는 교회를 쉽게 찾을 수 있었다. 그 교회에서 몇 주 예배를 드린 후 어느 주일 날 브래드는 목사님에게 어디든 필요한 곳에서 봉사하고 싶다고 하면서 “‘빗자루를 들기’만 해도 됩니다.”라고 말했다. 그러고는 예배실 의자 정리를 돕고 화장실 청소를 하기 시작했다. 브래드에게 가르침의 은사가 있다는 것을 교인들이 나중에 알게 되었지만, 그는 어떤 일도 마다하지 않았다.
Jesus taught two of His disciples, James and John, and their mother a lesson in servanthood. Their mother requested that her sons have a place of honor on each side of Christ when He came into His kingdom (MATTHEW 20:20-21). The other disciples heard about this and grew angry with them. Perhaps they wanted those positions for themselves? Jesus told them that exercising authority over others wasn’t the way to live (VV. 25-26), but instead serving was most important. “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (V. 26).
예수님은 두 제자 야고보와 요한과 그 어머니에게 섬김에 관한 교훈을 가르쳐 주셨다. 그 어머니는 주님의 나라가 임할 때 자기 두 아들이 그리스도의 양편에 각각 앉는 영광을 갖게 해달라고 간청했다(마태복음 20:20-21). 그러자 다른 제자들이 이를 듣고 그들에게 화를 내기 시작했다. 아마 그들도 그 자리를 원했던 것인지 모른다. 이때 예수님은 제자들에게 다른 사람에게 권세를 행하는 것(25-26절)보다 섬기며 사는 것이 가장 중요하다고 말씀하셨다. “너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되라”(26절).
Brad’s words “reach for the broom” are a practical picture for what each of us can do in our communities and churches to serve Christ. Brad described his life’s passion for God in this way: “I want to serve for the glory of God, for the good of the world, and for my own joy.” How will you and I “reach for the broom” as God leads us?
