LISTENING FOR GOD’S VOICE(1 KINGS 19:8-14)
(왕상 19:8) 이에 일어나 먹고 마시고 그 음식물의 힘을 의지하여 사십 주 사십 야를 가서 하나님의 산 호렙에 이르니라//And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
(왕상 19:9) 엘리야가 그 곳 굴에 들어가 거기서 머물더니 여호와의 말씀이 그에게 임하여 이르시되 엘리야야 네가 어찌하여 여기 있느냐//And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord {came} to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
(왕상 19:10) 그가 대답하되 내가 만군의 하나님 여호와께 열심이 유별하오니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 주의 언약을 버리고 주의 제단을 헐며 칼로 주의 선지자들을 죽였음이오며 오직 나만 남았거늘 그들이 내 생명을 찾아 빼앗으려 하나이다//And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, {even} I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
(왕상 19:11) 여호와께서 이르시되 너는 나가서 여호와 앞에서 산에 서라 하시더니 여호와께서 지나가시는데 여호와 앞에 크고 강한 바람이 산을 가르고 바위를 부수나 바람 가운데에 여호와께서 계시지 아니하며 바람 후에 지진이 있으나 지진 가운데에도 여호와께서 계시지 아니하며//And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; {but} the Lord {was} not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; {but} the Lord {was} not in the earthquake:
(왕상 19:12) 또 지진 후에 불이 있으나 불 가운데에도 여호와께서 계시지 아니하더니 불 후에 세미한 소리가 있는지라//And after the earthquake a fire; {but} the Lord {was} not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
(왕상 19:13) 엘리야가 듣고 겉옷으로 얼굴을 가리고 나가 굴 어귀에 서매 소리가 그에게 임하여 이르시되 엘리야야 네가 어찌하여 여기 있느냐//And it was {so}, when Elijah heard {it}, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, {there came} a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

In the early twentieth century, New York City had become a noisy place. With an overhead train, cars, trolleys, newsboys yelling, and people rushing around-life was loud! Yet, one day at Broadway and 34th Street, a man named Charles Kellogg declared to his friend, “Listen, I hear a cricket.”
20세기 초, 뉴욕은 소음 공해로 정말 시끄러웠다. 고가 열차와 자동차, 전차, 신문팔이 소년들의 큰 소리, 그리고 분주한 인파들로 뉴욕의 삶은 소음으로 넘쳐났다! 그러나 어느 날 브로드웨이와 34번가의 교차로에서 찰스 켈로그라고 하는 사람이 함께 가던 친구에게 “들어봐, 귀뚜라미 소리가 들려.”라고 외쳤다.
“Impossible,” his friend answered. “With all this racket you couldn’t hear a tiny sound like that.” Yet, Mr. Kellogg insisted, and eventually found the cricket, chirping in the window of a bakery. “What astonishing hearing you have,” his friend proclaimed. “Not at all,” Mr. Kellogg replied. “It’s a matter of where you focus your attention.”
“그럴 리가, 이런 소음 속에서 그런 작은 소리가 들릴 리 없어.” 친구가 대답했다. 하지만 자기 주장을 굽히지 않던 켈로그는 결국 한 빵집 창문에서 울고 있는 귀뚜라미를 찾아냈다. “정말 대단한 청력을 가졌네.” 라고 친구가 인정하자, 켈로그는 “전혀 그렇지 않아. 그건 무엇에 집중하느냐의 문제지.”라고 말했다.
Elijah was a prophet of God who’d just seen Him perform an amazing display of His power, but now the prophet was hiding in a cave for fear of the pagan queen (1 KINGS 19:1-9). This time, however, God didn’t want to communicate in a powerful way. Even though He had sent a great wind, an earthquake, and even a roaring fire (VV. 11-12), it was time now for Elijah to commune with God personally and quietly. God wanted to speak to the prophet in “a gentle whisper” (V. 12).
하나님의 선지자 엘리야는 하나님 능력이 놀랍게 역사하는 것을 직접 보았지만, 지금은 이교도 여왕이 두려워 동굴에 숨어 있었다(열왕기상 19:1-9). 그러나 하나님은 이번에는 강력한 방법으로 그와 소통하기를 원하지 않으셨다. 하나님은 강풍과 지진, 그리고 타오르는 불을 보내기도 하셨지만 (11-12절), 이 순간만큼은 엘리야가 하나님과 개인적으로 조용히 소통하는 시간이었다. 하나님은 선지자에게 “부드러운 속삭임”(12절)으로 말씀하기를 원하셨다.
Today, there’s a surplus of noise in our lives, yet God still speaks in a quiet voice through the Scriptures and by His Spirit. Taking time to prayerfully focus our attention on God will help us tune in to His comforting, guiding voice. BRENT HACKETT
오늘날, 우리 삶에 소음이 넘쳐나지만 하나님은 여전히 성경을 통해, 그리고 성령으로 조용히 말씀하신다. 기도하며 하나님께 집중하는 시간을 보낼 때 하나님의 위로하시고 인도하시는 음성을 듣는데 도움이 될 것이다.

Dear Father, I thank You that I can listen for Your Spirit to speak to me quietly.//사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 성령께서 조용히 말씀하는 것을 들을 수 있게 하시니 감사합니다. 매일 드리는 기도가 말하는 기도 뿐만 아니라 듣는 기도가 되게 하소서.
