THE JESUS STORY(1 JOHN 1:1-5)
(요일 1:1) 태초부터 있는 생명의 말씀에 관하여는 우리가 들은 바요 눈으로 본 바요 자세히 보고 우리의 손으로 만진 바라//That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
(요일 1:2) 이 생명이 나타내신 바 된지라 이 영원한 생명을 우리가 보았고 증언하여 너희에게 전하노니 이는 아버지와 함께 계시다가 우리에게 나타내신 바 된 이시니라//(For the life was manifested, and we have seen {it}, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
(요일 1:3) 우리가 보고 들은 바를 너희에게도 전함은 너희로 우리와 사귐이 있게 하려 함이니 우리의 사귐은 아버지와 그의 아들 예수 그리스도와 더불어 누림이라//That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship {is} with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
(요일 1:4) 우리가 이것을 씀은 우리의 기쁨이 충만하게 하려 함이라//And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
(요일 1:5) 우리가 그에게서 듣고 너희에게 전하는 소식은 이것이니 곧 하나님은 빛이시라 그에게는 어둠이 조금도 없으시다는 것이니라//This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Most people have never heard of Kate Hankey, but she was a remarkable woman. A teacher, evangelist, school organizer, missionary, and poet, she faithfully served Jesus in 1800s England. In 1867, Kate contracted a serious illness. During her recovery, she penned a lengthy poem in two parts: “The Story Wanted” and “The Story Told.” The poem expresses in a very personal way her relationship with Jesus and the events of His life.
케이트 행키는 널리 알려진 인물은 아니지만, 매우 특별한 여성이었다. 1800년대, 영국에서 교사, 전도자, 교육 행정가, 선교사, 그리고 시인으로 활동했던 이 분은 예수님을 신실하게 섬겼다. 1867년, 케이트는 심각한 병에 걸렸고, 회복 중에 “내가 듣고 싶은 이야기”와 “내가 들은 이야기”의 두 부분으로 구성된 장문의 시를 썼다. 이 시는 예수님과의 인격적인 관계와 그분의 삶에서 일어난 사건들을 매우 사적인 이야기 방식으로 표현했다.
All Scripture points to Jesus and tells His story. John begins his epistle reminding readers how they had personally experienced Jesus: “That which . . . we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-this we proclaim” (1 JOHN 1:1). Because of our experience of Him, the apostle writes, we’re telling the Jesus story: “The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it” (V. 2). Later, John makes the fascinating comment, “The word of God lives in you” (2:14). In other words, the Jesus story is our story too. We’re called to tell the story of Christ in light of our own experience with Him.
성경 전체는 예수님에 집중하며 예수님의 이야기를 증거한다. 요한은 자신의 서신 앞머리에 제자들이 각자 어떻게 예수님을 경험했는지에 대해 이렇게 쓰고 있다. “우리가…눈으로 본 바요 자세히 보고 우리의 손으로 만진 바라”(요한1서 1:1). 사도들은 예수님을 직접 경험했기 때문에 예수님을 증거한다고 말했다. “이 생명이 나타나신 바 된지라 이 영원한 생명을 우리가 보았고 증언하여 너희에게 전하노니”(2절). 이후 요한은 “하나님의 말씀이 너희 안에 거하시며”(2:14)라는 놀라운 표현을 썼다. 다시 말해, 예수님의 이야기가 우리 각자의 이야기이기도 한 것이다. 우리는 그렇게 예수님과의 개별적 경험을 바탕으로 그리스도를 전하라는 부름을 받은 것이다.
This is what Kate Hankey did in her poem. Eventually, the two parts of her poem became these beloved hymns: “I Love to Tell the Story” and “Tell Me the Old, Old Story.” Perhaps we might, like Kate, find our own words and share our Jesus story with others-the unique way in which He loved us, came to us, and rescued us. 케이트 행키가 시를 통해 표현하고자 했던 일은 바로 그것이었다. 이 두 편의 시는 훗날 우리가 즐겨 부르는 “주 예수 넓은 사랑”과 “주 예수 크신 사랑”이라는 두 찬송가로 전해지고 있다. 우리도 케이트처럼 예수님에 대한 간증을 자신의 말로 나눌 수 있기를 바란다. 주께서 특별한 방식으로 우리를 사랑하시고 찾아오시고 구원하신 것처럼 말이다.

Dear Jesus, thank You for rescuing me and doing Your loving work in my life.//사랑하는 예수님, 저를 구원해 주시고 제 삶에 주의 사랑을 보여주셔서 감사합니다. 주님은 모든 사랑을 십자가에서 남김없이 보여주셨으므로 이제는 내가 주님께 대한 사랑을 보여드리기 원합니다. 주여 나를 사용하시고 주님의 일에 나를 이끄소서. 내 안에 머물러 움츠려들게 마시고 주님을 향하여 튀어 나가게 하소서.
