PEOPLE OF ENCOURAGEMENT(ACTS 11:19-26)
(행 11:19) 그 때에 스데반의 일로 일어난 환난으로 말미암아 흩어진 자들이 베니게와 구브로와 안디옥까지 이르러 유대인에게만 말씀을 전하는데//Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
(행 11:20) 그 중에 구브로와 구레네 몇 사람이 안디옥에 이르러 헬라인에게도 말하여 주 예수를 전파하니//And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
(행 11:21) 주의 손이 그들과 함께 하시매 수많은 사람들이 믿고 주께 돌아오더라//And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.
(행 11:22) 예루살렘 교회가 이 사람들의 소문을 듣고 바나바를 안디옥까지 보내니//Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.
(행 11:23) 그가 이르러 하나님의 은혜를 보고 기뻐하여 모든 사람에게 굳건한 마음으로 주와 함께 머물러 있으라 권하니//Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.
(행 11:24) 바나바는 착한 사람이요 성령과 믿음이 충만한 사람이라 이에 큰 무리가 주께 더하여지더라//For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
(행 11:25) 바나바가 사울을 찾으러 다소에 가서//Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
(행 11:26) 만나매 안디옥에 데리고 와서 둘이 교회에 일 년간 모여 있어 큰 무리를 가르쳤고 제자들이 안디옥에서 비로소 그리스도인이라 일컬음을 받게 되었더라//And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

“Sheer encouragement.” That was the phrase J. R. R. Tolkien used to describe the personal support his friend and colleague C. S. Lewis gave him as he wrote the epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien’s work on the series had been painstaking and exacting, and he’d personally typed out the lengthy manuscripts more than twice. When he sent them to Lewis, Lewis responded, “All the long years you have spent on it are justified.”
“순수한 격려.” 이 말은 J. R. R. 톨킨이 그의 서사시 반지의 제왕 3 부작을 집필할 때 친구이자 동료인 C.S. 루이스로부터 개인적으로 격려 받은 일을 설명하며 사용한 말이다. 톨킨은 힘들고 복잡한 시리즈를 쓰면서 장문의 원고를 두 번 넘게 직접 타이핑 했다. 그의 원고를 루이스에게 보내자 루이스는 “그 긴 세월을 애쓴 보람이 여기에 나타났네.” 라고 말했다고 한다.
Perhaps Scripture’s best-known encourager was Joseph from Cyprus, better known as Barnabas (meaning “son of encouragement”), the name the apostles gave him (ACTS 4:36). It was Barnabas who advocated for Paul to the apostles (9:27). Later, when non-Jewish believers began to place their faith in Jesus, Luke tells us Barnabas “was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts” (11:23). Luke describes him as “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith,” adding that because of him, “a great number of people were brought to the Lord” (V. 24).
아마도 성경에서 가장 잘 알려진 격려자는 사도들이 붙여준 바나바 (“격려의 아들”이라는 뜻)라는 이름으로 더 잘 알려진 구브로 출신의 요셉일 것이다(사도행전 4:36). 사도들 앞에서 바울을 옹호해 준 사람이 바나바였다(9:27). 나중에 이방인 신자들이 예수님을 믿기 시작할 때에도 바나바가 “기뻐하여 모든 사람에게 굳건한 마음으로 주와 함께 머물러 있으라 권면하였다”고 누가는 말한다(11:23). 누가는 그를 “착한 사람이요 성령과 믿음이 충만한 사람”이라고 묘사하며 바나바 덕분에 “큰 무리가 주께 더하여졌다”고 했다(24절).
The worth of encouraging words can’t be measured. As we offer words of faith and love to others, God - who gives “eternal encouragement” (2 THESSALONIANS 2:16) - may move through what we share to transform someone’s life forever. 격려의 말이 주는 힘은 측정할 수가 없다. 우리가 다른 이들에게 믿음과 사랑의 말을 전할 때, “영원한 격려”(데살로니가후서 2:16)를 주시는 하나님께서 우리의 말을 통해 누군가의 삶을 영원히 바꿀 수가 있다. 오늘 누군가에게 “순수한 격려”를 할 수 있도록 주님 우리를 도우소서!
