GOD’S JUSTICE AND GRACE(NAHUM 1:1-8, 15)
(나 1:1) 니느웨에 대한 경고 곧 엘고스 사람 나훔의 묵시의 글이라//The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
(나 1:2) 여호와는 질투하시며 보복하시는 하나님이시니라 여호와는 보복하시며 진노하시되 자기를 거스르는 자에게 여호와는 보복하시며 자기를 대적하는 자에게 진노를 품으시며//God {is} jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and {is} furious; the Lord will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth {wrath} for his enemies.
(나 1:3) 여호와는 노하기를 더디하시며 권능이 크시며 벌 받을 자를 결코 내버려두지 아니하시느니라 여호와의 길은 회오리바람과 광풍에 있고 구름은 그의 발의 티끌이로다//The Lord {is} slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit {the wicked}: the Lord {hath} his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds {are} the dust of his feet.
(나 1:4) 그는 바다를 꾸짖어 그것을 말리시며 모든 강을 말리시나니 바산과 갈멜이 쇠하며 레바논의 꽃이 시드는도다//He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
(나 1:5) 그로 말미암아 산들이 진동하며 작은 산들이 녹고 그 앞에서는 땅 곧 세계와 그 가운데에 있는 모든 것들이 솟아오르는도다//The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
(나 1:6) 누가 능히 그의 분노 앞에 서며 누가 능히 그의 진노를 감당하랴 그의 진노가 불처럼 쏟아지니 그로 말미암아 바위들이 깨지는도다//Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
(나 1:7) 여호와는 선하시며 환난 날에 산성이시라 그는 자기에게 피하는 자들을 아시느니라//The Lord {is} good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
(나 1:8) 그가 범람하는 물로 그 곳을 진멸하시고 자기 대적들을 흑암으로 쫓아내시리라//But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
(나 1:15) 볼지어다 아름다운 소식을 알리고 화평을 전하는 자의 발이 산 위에 있도다 유다야 네 절기를 지키고 네 서원을 갚을지어다 악인이 진멸되었으니 그가 다시는 네 가운데로 통행하지 아니하리로다 하시니라//Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
(요절: 나훔 1:3) 여호와는 노하기를 더디 하시며 권능이 크시며 벌받을 자를 결코 내버려두지 아니하시느니라//The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished. [NAHUM 1:3]
English Romantic painter John Martin (1789-1854) is known for his apocalyptic landscapes depicting the destruction of civilizations. In these fantastic scenes, humans are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the destruction and powerless against the approaching doom. One painting, The Fall of Nineveh, depicts people fleeing the coming destruction of mounting waves under dark rolling clouds.
영국 낭만주의 화가 존 마틴(1789–1854)은 문명의 멸망을 묘사한 종말론적인 풍경들을 그린 작품으로 유명하다. 이 환상적인 장면들에서, 인간들은 엄청난 파괴의 크기에 압도당하고 다가오는 멸망에 맞서 제대로 힘을 쓰지 못한다. 작품 중 하나인 ‘니느웨의 몰락’은 어두운 구름 아래서 모든 것을 삼켜버릴 것 같은 높은 파도를 피해 달아나는 사람들을 묘사한다.
More than two thousand years before Martin’s painting, the prophet Nahum prophesied against Nineveh foretelling its judgment. The prophet used images of mountains quaking, hills melting, and the earth trembling (NAHUM 1:5) to symbolize God’s wrath on those who’d oppressed others for their own gain. However, God’s response to sin is not without grace. While Nahum reminds his listeners of God’s power, he notes that He is “slow to anger” (V. 3) and “cares for those who trust in him” (V. 7).
마틴의 그림이 그려지기 2천년도 더 전에, 나훔 선지자는 니느웨에 대한 심판을 예언했다. 선지자는 자신의 이익을 위해 다른 사람들을 억압했던 사람들에 대한 하나님의 분노를 상징하기 위해 산들이 진동하며 작은 산들이 녹고 그 앞에서 땅, 곧 세계와 그 가운데 있는 모든 것들이 솟아오르는 이미지 (나훔 1:5)를 사용했다. 하지만, 죄에 대한 하나님의 반응 가운데에서도 은혜가 있다. 나훔은 듣는 이들에게 하나님의 능력을 상기시켜주는 반면, 그가 “노하기를 더디 하시며”(3절)와 “자기에게 피하는 자들을 아시느니라” (7절)고 언급했다.
Descriptions of judgment are hard to read, but a world where evil isn’t confronted would be a terrible one. Thankfully the prophet doesn’t end on that note. He reminds us that God desires a good and just world: “Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace!” (V. 15). That good news is Jesus, who suffered the consequences of sin so we can have peace with God (ROMANS 5:1, 6). MATT LUCAS
심판에 대한 묘사들을 다 읽기가 쉽지 않지만, 악에 맞서지 않는 세상은 끔찍한 곳이 될 것이었다. 다행스럽게도 선지자의 예언은 심판으로만 끝마치지 않는다. 하나님께서는 선하고 의로운 세상을 원하신다는 것을 우리에게 알려 주신다. “볼지어다 아름다운 소식을 알리고 화평을 전하는 자의 발이 산 위에 있도다!”(15절). 그 아름다운 소식은 우리가 하나님과 평화를 누릴 수 있도록 죄의 결과의 고통을 감내하신 예수님이다(로마서 5:1, 6).

Father, I pray for those around the world who suffer unjustly.//하나님 아버지, 불의로 고통받는 세상 사람들을 위해 기도합니다. 악인의 오판으로 전쟁이라는 고통 가운데 있는 사람들을 구원하소서. 무슨 명목이든 전쟁을 먼저 일으킨 자가 하나님의 공의의 심판을 받게 하소서. 그러나 악인이 회개하고 돌아오면 용서하시는 주님이 그들이 돌이키는 은혜를 허락하소서. 처처에 기근과 온역과 지진이 있을 것이라지만 그 가운데서도 하나님의 백성들을 눈동자같이 지키시는 주님 안에서 평안을 누리게 하소서.
