SEARCH MY HEART, GOD(1 SAMUEL 16:4-12)
(삼상 16:4) 사무엘이 여호와의 말씀대로 행하여 베들레헴에 이르매 성읍 장로들이 떨며 그를 영접하여 이르되 평강을 위하여 오시나이까//And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
(삼상 16:5) 이르되 평강을 위함이니라 내가 여호와께 제사하러 왔으니 스스로 성결하게 하고 와서 나와 함께 제사하자 하고 이새와 그의 아들들을 성결하게 하고 제사에 청하니라//And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
(삼상 16:6) 그들이 오매 사무엘이 엘리압을 보고 마음에 이르기를 여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다 하였더니//And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed {is} before him.
(삼상 16:7) 여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 하시더라//But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for {the Lord seeth} not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
(삼상 16:8) 이새가 아비나답을 불러 사무엘 앞을 지나가게 하매 사무엘이 이르되 이도 여호와께서 택하지 아니하셨느니라 하니//Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
(삼상 16:9) 이새가 삼마로 지나게 하매 사무엘이 이르되 이도 여호와께서 택하지 아니하셨느니라 하니라//Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
(삼상 16:10) 이새가 그의 아들 일곱을 다 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 하나 사무엘이 이새에게 이르되 여호와께서 이들을 택하지 아니하셨느니라 하고//Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
(삼상 16:11) 또 사무엘이 이새에게 이르되 네 아들들이 다 여기 있느냐 이새가 이르되 아직 막내가 남았는데 그는 양을 지키나이다 사무엘이 이새에게 이르되 사람을 보내어 그를 데려오라 그가 여기 오기까지는 우리가 식사 자리에 앉지 아니하겠노라//And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all {thy} children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
(삼상 16:12) 이에 사람을 보내어 그를 데려오매 그의 빛이 붉고 눈이 빼어나고 얼굴이 아름답더라 여호와께서 이르시되 이가 그니 일어나 기름을 부으라 하시는지라//And he sent, and brought him in. Now he {was} ruddy, {and} withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this {is} he.
(요절: 사무엘상 16:7) 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라//People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. [1 SAMUEL 16:7]
To reduce food waste, a supermarket chain in Singapore sells slightly blemished fruits and vegetables at lower prices. In one year, this initiative saved more than 850 tons (771,000 KG) of produce that previously would’ve been thrown out for not meeting aesthetic standards. Shoppers soon learned that outward appearances - scars and quirky shapes - don’t affect flavor and nutritional value. What’s on the outside doesn’t always determine what’s on the inside.
싱가포르의 한 슈퍼마켓 체인점에서는 음식물 쓰레기를 줄이기 위해 약간의 흠이 있는 과일이나 야채를 저렴한 가격에 판매한다. 이렇게 함으로써 이전에는 미관상 기준미달로 버려졌을 농산물을 1년에 850 톤 이상 구제할 수 있었다. 고객들은 외관상 흠집이나 이상한 모양이 맛이나 영양가에는 영향을 미치지 않는다는 사실을 곧 알게 되었다. 겉모습이 언제나 내면을 결정하는 것은 아니다.
The prophet Samuel learned a similar lesson when he was sent by God to anoint the next king of Israel (1 SAMUEL 16:1). When he saw Eliab, the firstborn son of Jesse, Samuel thought he was the chosen one. But God said: “Do not consider his appearance or his height … People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (V. 7). Out of Jesse’s eight sons, God chose the youngest, David - who was tending his father’s sheep (V. 11) - to be the next king.
사무엘 선지자는 하나님이 이스라엘의 다음 왕에게 기름을 부으라고 그를 보냈을 때 비슷한 교훈을 얻었다(사무엘상 16:1). 사무엘은 이새의 맏아들 엘리압을 보고 하나님께서 택하신 자라고 생각했지만, 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라… 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라”(7절). 하나님은 이새의 여덟 아들 중에서 아버지의 양을 치는 막내 아들 다윗을 다음 왕으로 택하셨다(11절).
God is more concerned with our hearts than with outward credentials - the school we attended, what we earn, or how much we volunteer. Jesus taught His disciples to focus on purifying their hearts of selfish and evil thoughts because “what comes out of a person is what defiles them” (MARK 7:20). Just as Samuel learned not to consider outward appearances, may we, with God’s help, examine our hearts - our thoughts and intentions - in all that we do. JASMINE GOH
하나님은 학벌이나 수입, 많은 봉사 활동 같은 외적인 자격보다 우리의 마음에 더 관심을 가지신다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “사람에게서 나오는 그것이 사람을 더럽게 한다”(마가복음 7:20)고 하시면서, 이기적이고 악한 마음을 깨끗하게 하는 데 집중하라고 가르치셨다. 사무엘이 외모로 판단해서는 안된다는 것을 깨달은 것처럼, 우리도 무슨 일을 하든지 하나님의 도우심으로 우리 마음의 생각과 의도를 점검할 수 있기를 바란다.
When have you done a “good thing” with the wrong motive? How can you ensure that what’s in your heart is pure?
잘못된 동기로 “선한 일”을 한 적이 있습니까? 당신의 마음이 깨끗하다는 것을 어떻게 확신할 수 있습니까?
Dear God, please help me to do what honors You.//사랑하는 하나님, 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 일을 할 수 있도록 도와주소서. 마음 속의 불순한 의도가 행동으로 나타나 부끄러움을 당하지 않게 하시고, 항상 마음 속에 거룩한 것을 담고 그로 인해 드러나는 행동을 인하여 칭찬듣는 삶을 살아가게 하소서. 마음 속의 생각을 의지로 실천하게 하소서.
