A NEW COMMAND TO LOVE(JOHN 13:3-5, 12-15, 31-35)
(요 13:3) 저녁 먹는 중 예수는 아버지께서 모든 것을 자기 손에 맡기신 것과 또 자기가 하나님께로부터 오셨다가 하나님께로 돌아가실 것을 아시고//Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;
(요 13:4) 저녁 잡수시던 자리에서 일어나 겉옷을 벗고 수건을 가져다가 허리에 두르시고//He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.
(요 13:5) 이에 대야에 물을 떠서 제자들의 발을 씻으시고 그 두르신 수건으로 닦기를 시작하여//After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe {them} with the towel wherewith he was girded.
(요 13:12) 그들의 발을 씻으신 후에 옷을 입으시고 다시 앉아 그들에게 이르시되 내가 너희에게 행한 것을 너희가 아느냐//So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?
(요 13:13) 너희가 나를 선생이라 또는 주라 하니 너희 말이 옳도다 내가 그러하다//Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for {so} I am.
(요 13:14) 내가 주와 또는 선생이 되어 너희 발을 씻었으니 너희도 서로 발을 씻어 주는 것이 옳으니라//If I then, {your} Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
(요 13:15) 내가 너희에게 행한 것 같이 너희도 행하게 하려 하여 본을 보였노라//For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.
(요 13:31) 그가 나간 후에 예수께서 이르시되 지금 인자가 영광을 받았고 하나님도 인자로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨도다//Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
(요 13:32) 만일 하나님이 그로 말미암아 영광을 받으셨으면 하나님도 자기로 말미암아 그에게 영광을 주시리니 곧 주시리라//If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
(요 13:33) 작은 자들아 내가 아직 잠시 너희와 함께 있겠노라 너희가 나를 찾을 것이나 일찍이 내가 유대인들에게 너희는 내가 가는 곳에 올 수 없다고 말한 것과 같이 지금 너희에게도 이르노라//Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
(요 13:34) 새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라//A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
(요 13:35) 너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라//By this shall all {men} know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

In a tradition starting as early as the thirteenth century, members of the royal family in the United Kingdom give gifts to people in need on Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday. The practice is rooted in the meaning of the word maundy, which comes from the Latin mandatum, “command.” The command being commemorated is the new one that Jesus gave to His friends on the night before He died: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (JOHN 13:34).
영국 왕실은 13세기까지 거슬러 올라가는 전통에 따라 성 금요일 전날인 세족 목요일에 어려운 사람들에게 선물을 나누어준다. 이 관습은 ‘몬디(maundy)’라는 단어의 뜻에 근거를 두고 있는데, 그 단어는 “명령”을 의미하는 라틴어 ‘만다툼(mandatum)’에서 유래되었다. 이 전통을 통해 예수님이 돌아가시기 전날 밤 제자들에게 주신 새 계명, “서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(요한복음 13:34) 고 하신 명령을 기념하는 것이다.
Jesus was a leader who took on the role of a servant as He washed His friends’ feet (V. 5). He then called them to do the same: “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (V. 15). And in an even greater act of sacrifice, He lay down His life, dying on the cross (19:30). Out of mercy and love, He gave Himself that we might enjoy the fullness of life.
예수님은 제자들의 발을 씻어 주심으로 종의 역할을 감당한 지도자셨다 (5절). 그러고 나서 주님은 제자들에게도 똑같이 할 것을 요구하셨다. “내가 너희에게 행한 것 같이 너희도 행하게 하려 하여 본을 보였노라”(15절). 그리고 더 큰 희생의 행위로 십자가에 달려 돌아가셨다(19:30). 예수님은 우리가 온전한 삶을 누릴 수 있도록 자비와 사랑으로 자신을 내어주셨다.
The tradition of the British royal family serving people in need continues as a symbol of following Jesus’ great example. We may not have been born into a place of privilege, but when we place our faith in Jesus, we become members of His family. And we too can show our love by living out His new command. As we depend on God’s Spirit to change us from within, we can reach out to others with care, affirmation, and grace. AMY BOUCHER PYE
어려운 사람들을 섬기는 영국 왕실의 전통은 예수님의 훌륭한 본보기를 따르는 상징으로 계속 이어지고 있다. 우리가 특권층으로 태어나지 않았을 지는 몰라도 예수님을 믿으면 그분의 가족이 된다. 그리고 우리도 예수님의 새 계명을 따라 삶으로써 우리의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있다. 우리 안에 계셔서 우리를 변화시키시는 성령님께 의지할 때, 우리는 다른 사람들에게 다가가 그들을 배려하고 인정하며 은혜를 베풀 수 있다.
