ANGELS ON THE WALLS(NEHEMIAH 4:6-9)
(느 4:6) 이에 우리가 성을 건축하여 전부가 연결되고 높이가 절반에 이르렀으니 이는 백성이 마음 들여 일을 하였음이니라//So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
(느 4:7) 산발랏과 도비야와 아라비아 사람들과 암몬 사람들과 아스돗 사람들이 예루살렘 성이 중수되어 그 허물어진 틈이 메꾸어져 간다 함을 듣고 심히 분노하여//But it came to pass, {that} when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, {and} that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,
(느 4:8) 다 함께 꾀하기를 예루살렘으로 가서 치고 그 곳을 요란하게 하자 하기로//And conspired all of them together to come {and} to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
(느 4:9) 우리가 우리 하나님께 기도하며 그들로 말미암아 파수꾼을 두어 주야로 방비하는데//Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

When Wallace and Mary Brown moved to an impoverished part of Birmingham, England, to pastor a dying church, they didn’t know that a gang had made the grounds of their church and home its headquarters. The Browns had bricks thrown through their windows, their fences set on fire, and their children threatened. The abuse continued for months; the police were unable to stop it.
월리스와 메리 브라운이 죽어가는 한 교회를 목회하려고 잉글랜드 버밍엄의 가난한 지역으로 이사했을 때, 그 교회와 사택이 한 폭력조직의 본부로 사용되고 있는 것을 몰랐다. 브라운 부부는 창문으로 벽돌이 날아 들어오고 울타리가 불타고 자녀들이 위협받는 상황에 놓이게 되었다. 몇 달 동안 폭력이 계속되었지만 경찰도 그것을 막지 못했다.
The book of Nehemiah recounts how the Israelites rebuilt Jerusalem’s broken walls. When locals set out to “stir up trouble,” threatening them with violence (NEHEMIAH 4:8), the Israelites “prayed to . . . God and posted a guard” (V. 9). Feeling God used this passage to direct them, the Browns, their children, and a few others walked round their church’s walls, praying that He would install angels as guards to protect them. The gang jeered, but the next day, only half of them showed up. The day after that, only five were there, and the day after, no one came. The Browns later heard the gang had given up terrorizing people.
느헤미야서는 이스라엘이 어떻게 예루살렘의 무너진 성벽을 재건했는지를 기록하고 있다. 지역 세력들이 폭력으로 위협하며 “문제를 일으키려” 할 때(느헤미야 4:8), 이스라엘 백성들은 “하나님께 기도하며… 파수꾼을 두어 방비했다”(9절). 하나님이 그들을 인도하시려고 이 구절을 주셨다고 느낀 브라운 부부는 자녀들과 몇몇 다른 사람들과 함께 교회 담을 돌면서 자신들을 보호해줄 천사들을 보내 달라고 하나님께 기도했다. 이에 야유를 보내던 폭력배들이 이튿날엔 평소의 절반 정도만 나타났다. 그 다음 날에는 다섯 명만 나타났고 그 다음날에는 아무도 오지 않았다. 나중에 브라운 부부는 폭력배들이 사람들을 더 이상 괴롭히지 않는다는 소식을 들었다.
This miraculous answer to prayer isn’t a formula for our own protection, but it’s a reminder that opposition to God’s work will come and must be fought with the weapon of prayer. “Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome,” Nehemiah told the Israelites (V. 14). 이런 기적 같은 기도 응답이 우리 자신을 보호하는 공식은 아니지만, 이 일은 하나님의 일을 하다가 반대에 부딪히면 기도라는 무기를 가지고 싸워야 한다는 것을 말해준다. 느헤미야는 이스라엘 백성들에게 “지극히 크시고 두려우신 주를 기억하라”고 말했다(14절). 하나님은 폭력적인 마음까지도 풀 수 있는 분이시다.
