NO MORE PREJUDICE(1 SAMUEL 16:1-7)
(삼상 16:1) 여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 내가 이미 사울을 버려 이스라엘 왕이 되지 못하게 하였거늘 네가 그를 위하여 언제까지 슬퍼하겠느냐 너는 뿔에 기름을 채워 가지고 가라 내가 너를 베들레헴 사람 이새에게로 보내리니 이는 내가 그의 아들 중에서 한 왕을 보았느니라 하시는지라//And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
(삼상 16:2) 사무엘이 이르되 내가 어찌 갈 수 있으리이까 사울이 들으면 나를 죽이리이다 하니 여호와께서 이르시되 너는 암송아지를 끌고 가서 말하기를 내가 여호와께 제사를 드리러 왔다 하고//And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear {it}, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
(삼상 16:3) 이새를 제사에 청하라 내가 네게 행할 일을 가르치리니 내가 네게 알게 하는 자에게 나를 위하여 기름을 부을지니라//And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me {him} whom I name unto thee.
(삼상 16:4) 사무엘이 여호와의 말씀대로 행하여 베들레헴에 이르매 성읍 장로들이 떨며 그를 영접하여 이르되 평강을 위하여 오시나이까//And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
(삼상 16:5) 이르되 평강을 위함이니라 내가 여호와께 제사하러 왔으니 스스로 성결하게 하고 와서 나와 함께 제사하자 하고 이새와 그의 아들들을 성결하게 하고 제사에 청하니라//And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
(삼상 16:6) 그들이 오매 사무엘이 엘리압을 보고 마음에 이르기를 여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다 하였더니//And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed {is} before him.
(삼상 16:7) 여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라 하시더라//But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for {the Lord seeth} not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

Many years ago, Julie Landsman auditioned for principal French hornist for New York’s Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The MET held their auditions behind a screen to avoid prejudice by the judges. Landsman did well in her audition and ended up winning the competition. But when she stepped out from behind the screen, some of the all-male judges walked to the rear of the room and turned their backs on her. Apparently, they were looking for someone else.

When the Israelites asked for a king, God accommodated the people and gave them a man who was physically imposing like the other nations had (1 SAMUEL 8:5; 9:2). But because Saul’s first years as king were marked by faithlessness and disobedience, God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint a new king (16:1-13). When Samuel saw Eliab, the oldest son, he assumed that God had chosen him to be king because he was physically impressive. But God challenged Samuel’s thinking: “People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (V. 7). God had chosen David to lead His people (V. 12).
이스라엘 백성들이 왕을 요구했을 때, 하나님은 백성들의 뜻을 수용하여 다른 나라들처럼 신체적으로 당당한 사람을 그들에게 왕으로 주셨다 (사무엘상 8:5; 9:2). 그러나 사울이 왕으로서 보낸 첫 몇 년은 불신과 불순종으로 점철되었기 때문에 하나님은 사무엘을 베들레헴으로 보내어 새 왕에게 기름을 붓도록 하셨다(16:1-13). 사무엘은 맏아들인 엘리압을 보았을 때 그가 신체적으로 뛰어났기 때문에 하나님께서 그를 왕으로 선택하셨다고 생각했다. 그러나 하나님은 사무엘의 생각과 달랐다. “사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라”(7절). 하나님은 다윗을 택하여 그의 백성을 인도하게 하셨다(12절).
When evaluating people’s ability and suitability for His purposes, God looks at character, will, and motives. He invites us to be attuned to see the world and people as He does-focusing on peoples’ hearts and not their outward appearance or credentials. MARVIN WILLIAMS
하나님의 목적을 위해 사람들의 능력과 적합성을 평가할 때 하나님은 성품과 의지와 행동의 동기를 보신다. 하나님은 우리가 이 세상이나 사람들을 볼 때 하나님이 보시는 것처럼 하라고 권하신다. 그것은 사람들의 외모나 자격이 아니라 그 마음에 초점을 맞추는 것이다.

Compassionate God, please help me not to evaluate people based on their appearances.//긍휼의 하나님, 겉모습으로 사람들을 평가하지 않도록 도와주소서. 하나님의 시각으로 세상과 다른 사람들을 바라보게 하소서. 내 마음의 렌즈가 온전하게 하나님의 렌즈와 동일시되게 하소서. 세상에 물든 나의 마음이 하나님의 마음으로 빚어지게 하소서. 세월이 흐를수록 인생에서 하나님을 향하게 하소서.
