THE CROWN OF LIFE(JAMES 1:1-12)
(약 1:1) 하나님과 주 예수 그리스도의 종 야고보는 흩어져 있는 열두 지파에게 문안하노라//James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
(약 1:2) 내 형제들아 너희가 여러 가지 시험을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라//My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
(약 1:3) 이는 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는 줄 너희가 앎이라//Knowing {this}, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
(약 1:4) 인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라//But let patience have {her} perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
(약 1:5) 너희 중에 누구든지 지혜가 부족하거든 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 아니하시는 하나님께 구하라 그리하면 주시리라//If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all {men} liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
(약 1:6) 오직 믿음으로 구하고 조금도 의심하지 말라 의심하는 자는 마치 바람에 밀려 요동하는 바다 물결 같으니//But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
(약 1:7) 이런 사람은 무엇이든지 주께 얻기를 생각하지 말라//For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
(약 1:8) 두 마음을 품어 모든 일에 정함이 없는 자로다//A double minded man {is} unstable in all his ways.
(약 1:9) 낮은 형제는 자기의 높음을 자랑하고//Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
(약 1:10) 부한 자는 자기의 낮아짐을 자랑할지니 이는 그가 풀의 꽃과 같이 지나감이라//But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
(약 1:11) 해가 돋고 뜨거운 바람이 불어 풀을 말리면 꽃이 떨어져 그 모양의 아름다움이 없어지나니 부한 자도 그 행하는 일에 이와 같이 쇠잔하리라//For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
(약 1:12) 시험을 참는 자는 복이 있나니 이는 시련을 견디어 낸 자가 주께서 자기를 사랑하는 자들에게 약속하신 생명의 면류관을 얻을 것이기 때문이라//Blessed {is} the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Twelve-year-old LeeAdianez Rodriguez-Espada was worried that she’d be late for a 5K run (just over 3 miles). Her anxiousness led her to take off with a group of runners fifteen minutes earlier than her start time - with participants of the halfmarathon (more than 13 miles!). LeeAdianez fell in pace with other runners and put one foot in front of the other. At mile four, with the finish line nowhere in sight, she realized that she was in a longer and more difficult race. Instead of dropping out, she simply kept running. The accidental half-marathoner completed her 13.1-mile race and placed 1,885th out of 2,111 finishers. Now that’s perseverance!
열 두 살의 리아디아네즈 로드리게즈-에스파다는 5킬로미터(3마일이 조금 넘는) 경주에 늦을까 봐 걱정이 됐다. 너무 긴장한 나머지 자기가 뛸 경주보다 15분 앞서 하프 마라톤(13마일 이상!) 참가자들에 섞여 출발해 버렸다. 리아디아네즈는 다른 주자들과 보조를 맞추며 한발 한발 앞으로 달려 나갔다. 4마일을 달렸는데도 결승선이 나타나지 않자 아이는 자기가 더 멀고 더 힘든 경주에 잘못 들어온 것을 알았다. 하지만 중도에 포기하지 않고 계속 달렸다. 이렇게 생각지도 않은 하프 마라톤을 뛴 리아디아네즈는 13.1마일 경주를 완주하여 2,111명 중 1,885 번째로 들어왔다. 인내력으로 해낸 것이다!
While undergoing persecution, many first-century believers in Jesus wanted to drop out of the race for Christ, but James encouraged them to keep running. If they patiently endured testing, God promised a double reward (JAMES 1:4, 12). First, “perseverance [would] finish its work” so they could be “mature and complete, not lacking anything” (V. 4). Second, God would give them the “crown of life” - life in Jesus on earth and the promise of being in His presence in the life to come (V. 12).
예수님을 믿었던 많은 초대교회 신자들도 박해 아래에서 그리스도를 향한 경주를 그만두고 싶었다. 그러나 야고보는 그들에게 계속 달리라고 격려했다. 인내하며 시험을 견디는 사람들에게 하나님은 두 가지 보상을 약속하셨다(야고보서 1:4, 12). 첫째는, “인내를 온전히 이루면” 그들로 “온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하겠다”는 약속이다(4절). 둘째는, 하나님께서 그들에게 “생명의 면류관”을 주셔서 이 땅에서는 예수님 안에서 살며 내세에는 주님과 함께 거할 것이라는 약속이다(12절).
Some days the Christian race feels like it’s not the one we signed up for - it’s something longer and more difficult than we expected. But as God provides what we need, we can persevere and keep on running. MARVIN WILLIAMS
때로는 그리스도인의 경주가 우리가 이미 알고 등록한 경주와 달리, 생각보다 더 길고 더 어려운 것처럼 느껴지기도 한다. 그러나 하나님께서 우리의 필요를 공급하시면 우리는 인내하며 계속 달릴 수 있다.

Dear God, my legs are tired, and I feel like giving up. Please strengthen me.//사랑하는 하나님, 이제는 다리가 아프고 그만두고 싶습니다. 저에게 힘을 주소서. 결승선이 마치 코 앞에 있는 것으로 알고 달려왔는데 실제로는 까마득히 먼 곳에 있을지라도 주님이 이끌어주시는 힘을 의지하여 계속 달리게 하소서. 결승점을 기대하기보다는 내 손을 잡고 함께 뛰시는 주님을 바라보게 하소서.
