LEARNING FROM SCARS(GENESIS 32:22-32)
(창 32:22) 밤에 일어나 두 아내와 두 여종과 열한 아들을 인도하여 얍복 나루를 건널새//And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
(창 32:23) 그들을 인도하여 시내를 건너가게 하며 그의 소유도 건너가게 하고//And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
(창 32:24) 야곱은 홀로 남았더니 어떤 사람이 날이 새도록 야곱과 씨름하다가//And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
(창 32:25) 자기가 야곱을 이기지 못함을 보고 그가 야곱의 허벅지 관절을 치매 야곱의 허벅지 관절이 그 사람과 씨름할 때에 어긋났더라//And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
(창 32:26) 그가 이르되 날이 새려하니 나로 가게 하라 야곱이 이르되 당신이 내게 축복하지 아니하면 가게 하지 아니하겠나이다//And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
(창 32:27) 그 사람이 그에게 이르되 네 이름이 무엇이냐 그가 이르되 야곱이니이다//And he said unto him, What {is} thy name? And he said, Jacob.
(창 32:28) 그가 이르되 네 이름을 다시는 야곱이라 부를 것이 아니요 이스라엘이라 부를 것이니 이는 네가 하나님과 및 사람들과 겨루어 이겼음이니라//And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
(창 32:29) 야곱이 청하여 이르되 당신의 이름을 알려주소서 그 사람이 이르되 어찌하여 내 이름을 묻느냐 하고 거기서 야곱에게 축복한지라//And Jacob asked {him}, and said, Tell {me}, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore {is} it {that} thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
(창 32:30) 그러므로 야곱이 그 곳 이름을 브니엘이라 하였으니 그가 이르기를 내가 하나님과 대면하여 보았으나 내 생명이 보전되었다 함이더라//And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
(창 32:31) 그가 브니엘을 지날 때에 해가 돋았고 그의 허벅다리로 말미암아 절었더라//And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
(창 32:32) 그 사람이 야곱의 허벅지 관절에 있는 둔부의 힘줄을 쳤으므로 이스라엘 사람들이 지금까지 허벅지 관절에 있는 둔부의 힘줄을 먹지 아니하더라//Therefore the children of Israel eat not {of} the sinew which shrank, which {is} upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
(요절: 창세기 32:31) (야곱이) 브니엘을 지날 때에 해가 돋았고 그의 허벅다리로 말미암아 절었더라//The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and [Jacob] was limping because of his hip. [ GENESIS 32:31 ]
Faye touched the scars on her abdomen. She had endured another surgery to remove esophageal-stomach cancer. This time doctors had taken part of her stomach and left a jagged scar that revealed the extent of their work. She told her husband, “Scars represent either the pain of cancer or the start of healing. I choose my scars to be symbols of healing.”
식도암을 제거하기 위해 또 다른 수술을 받았던 페이는 자기 배에 남은 수술 자국을 만져 보았다. 의사들이 위 일부를 떼어냈는데 그 수술의 심각성을 알려주는 큰 흉터가 남아 있었다. 페이가 남편에게 말했다. “이 수술 자국은 암의 고통을 말해주기도 하지만 치유의 시작을 말해주기도 해요. 나는 치유의 상징으로 생각하기로 했어요.”
Jacob faced a similar choice after his all-night wrestling match with God. The divine assailant wrenched Jacob’s hip out of socket, so that Jacob was left exhausted and with a noticeable limp. Months later, when Jacob massaged his tender hip, I wonder what he reflected on?
하나님과 밤새 씨름한 야곱도 이와 비슷한 선택을 해야 했다. 하나님의 사람이 야곱의 허벅다리 관절을 비틀어 어긋나게 하자 힘을 잃은 야곱은 심하게 다리를 절었다. 여러 달 후에 그는 아픈 허벅다리를 주무르며 무슨 생각을 했을까?
Was he filled with regret for his years of deceit that forced this fateful match? The divine messenger had wrestled the truth out of him, refusing to bless him until Jacob owned up to who he was. He confessed he was Jacob, the “heel grabber” (SEE GENESIS 25:26). He’d played tricks on his brother Esau and father-in-law Laban, tripping them to gain advantage. The divine wrestler said Jacob’s new name would be “Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome” (32:28).
속이며 살아온 과거 때문에 씨름을 피할 수 없게 된 자신을 크게 후회했을까? 하나님의 사자는 야곱이 자신이 진정 어떤 사람인지 시인하기 전까지 축복을 거절하면서 그와 씨름하며 그의 진실을 드러냈다. 그는 자기 이름이 야곱, 곧 “발꿈치를 잡은 자”(창세기 25:26 참조)라고 고백했다. 그는 이득을 취하려고 형 에서와 장인 라반을 잔꾀로 속였다. 하나님의 사자는 그가 “하나님과 및 사람들과 겨루어 이겼다”(32:28) 하여 야곱에게 이스라엘이라는 새 이름을 주었다.
Jacob’s limp represented the death of his old life of deceit and the beginning of his new life with God. The end of Jacob and the start of Israel. His limp led him to lean on God, who now moved powerfully in and through him. MIKE WITTMER
야곱의 절뚝거림은 예전의 속이던 삶은 죽고 이제 하나님과 함께하는 새로운 삶이 시작된 것을 의미했다. 야곱의 끝이요, 이스라엘의 시작이었다. 그는 이제 그 절뚝거림 때문에 그의 안에서, 또 그를 통해 강하게 역사하시는 하나님을 의지하게 되었다.

Father, my limp is a sign of Your love.//하나님 아버지, 저의 절뚝거림은 하나님의 사랑의 표시입니다. 그러나 나의 절뚝거림을 합리화하지 말게 하소서. 나의 과거의 허물과 잘못들을 거울삼아 새로운 나로 살아가게 하소서. 야곱의 이름이 이스라엘로 바뀌었지만 과거의 그를 생각하며 겸손해지기 위해 야곱이라는 이름을 자주 사용했던 것처럼, 나도 야곱의 나를 돌아보며 살아가게 하소서.
