본문 : 빌립보서 1:3-11(Philippians 1:3-11)
(빌 1:3) 내가 너희를 생각할 때마다 나의 하나님께 감사하며//I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,
(빌 1:4) 간구할 때마다 너희 무리를 위하여 기쁨으로 항상 간구함은//Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,
(빌 1:5) 너희가 첫날부터 이제까지 복음을 위한 일에 참여하고 있기 때문이라//For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;
(빌 1:6) 너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라//Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform {it} until the day of Jesus Christ:
(빌 1:7) 내가 너희 무리를 위하여 이와 같이 생각하는 것이 마땅하니 이는 너희가 내 마음에 있음이며 나의 매임과 복음을 변명함과 확정함에 너희가 다 나와 함께 은혜에 참여한 자가 됨이라//Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
(빌 1:8) 내가 예수 그리스도의 심장으로 너희 무리를 얼마나 사모하는지 하나님이 내 증인이시니라//For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
(빌 1:9) 내가 기도하노라 너희 사랑을 지식과 모든 총명으로 점점 더 풍성하게 하사//And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and {in} all judgment;
(빌 1:10) 너희로 지극히 선한 것을 분별하며 또 진실하여 허물없이 그리스도의 날까지 이르고//That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
(빌 1:11) 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 의의 열매가 가득하여 하나님의 영광과 찬송이 되기를 원하노라//Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
(요절 : 빌립보서 1:9-10) 내가 기도하노라 … 너희로 지극히 선한 것을 분별하며//I pray … that you may approve the things that are excellent.
As a kid, one of my favorite pastimes was skipping stones across the surface of a smooth lake. Inevitably, ripples would flow from the impact of the stone.
어렸을 때 내가 가장 좋아하던 오락은 잔잔한 호수의 표면에 돌로 물수제비를 뜨는 일이었다. 필연적으로, 돌이 닿은 곳으로부터 잔물결이 흘렀다.
It's like that with choices. Every choice we make creates a ripple effect on our lives as well as on the lives of others. The choices we have made throughout life determine where we are and what we are becoming.
선택도 그와 유사하다. 우리가 하는 모든 선택은 우리 자신의 삶에도 그렇고 다른 사람의 삶에도 잔물결 효과를 만들어 낸다. 우리 인생을 통해 우리가 택했던 모든 선택은 우리가 지금 어디에 있는가와 우리가 무엇이 될 것인가를 결정한다.
Choices are also telling. What we really want, love, and think show up in the choices we make.
또한 선택이 말하기도 한다. 우리가 진정으로 원하고, 사랑하고, 생각하는 것이 무엇인가 하는 것이 우리가 택하는 선택에서 드러난다.
It's no wonder then that Paul urged us to make "excellent" choices - choices that emanate from a heart fully committed to Jesus. He stated that when our love abounds in knowledge and discernment, we are able to understand what is best, so that we may "approve the things that are excellent"(Phil. 1:9-10). Excellent choices are the proof of a life that is deeply committed to Jesus and His ways, and they have the ripple effect of filling our lives "with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God"(v.11).
그렇다면, 바울이 우리에게, "지극히 선한" 선택, 즉, 예수님께 전적으로 헌신된 마음에서 나오는 선택을 하라고 촉구했던 것이 이해가 된다. 그가 말한 것은, 지식과 통찰 안에 우리의 사랑이 풍부할 때, 우리는 무엇이 최고인지를 알 수 있으며, "지극히 선한 것을 분별할 수 있다"(빌립보서 1:9-10). 지극히 선한 선택(Excellent choices)은 우리의 삶이 예수님과 그분의 방법에 깊이 헌신되어 있다는 증거이며, 그것은 우리의 삶이 "예수 그리스도로 말미암아 의의 열매가 가득하여 하나님의 영광과 찬송이 되는" 것으로 채워지는(11절) 잔물결 효과를 갖는다.

Make an excellent choice and watch the ripple effect of blessing.//지극히 선한 선택을 하십시오. 그리고 축복이라는 잔물결의 효과를 바라보십시오. 삶을 살다보면 무언가 결정을 할 때가 아주 많이 나타납니다. 그때 일반적으로 두 가지 중의 하나를 선택하게 됩니다. 하나는 나의 욕심을 따른 것이고, 하나는 성령의 인도를 따른 것입니다. 그런데 나의 욕심을 따라 결정할 때는 그것이 결국에 나에게 손해로 나타나는 경우가 많습니다. 그 손해란 금전적인 것만을 말하는 것이 아니고, 혹은 육적으로 혹은 영적으로 손해의 형태로 나타납니다. 그런데 성령의 도우심을 따라 선택하면 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이루게 됩니다. 성령의 도우심을 받기 위해 우리는 항상 하나님의 은혜 안에 거해야 하고, 그 방법은 말씀과 기도에 충실하는 것입니다.
