본문 : 신명기 4:1-10(Deuteronomy 4:1-10)
(신 4:1) 이스라엘아 이제 내가 너희에게 가르치는 규례와 법도를 듣고 준행하라 그리하면 너희가 살 것이요 너희 조상의 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 주시는 땅에 들어가서 그것을 얻게 되리라//Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do {them}, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers giveth you.
(신 4:2) 내가 너희에게 명령하는 말을 너희는 가감하지 말고 내가 너희에게 내리는 너희 하나님 여호와의 명령을 지키라//Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish {ought} from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
(신 4:3) 여호와께서 바알브올의 일로 말미암아 행하신 바를 너희가 눈으로 보았거니와 바알브올을 따른 모든 사람을 너희의 하나님 여호와께서 너희 가운데에서 멸망시키셨으되//Your eyes have seen what the Lord did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the Lord thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
(신 4:4) 오직 너희의 하나님 여호와께 붙어 떠나지 않은 너희는 오늘까지 다 생존하였느니라//But ye that did cleave unto the Lord your God {are} alive every one of you this day.
(신 4:5) 내가 나의 하나님 여호와께서 명령하신 대로 규례와 법도를 너희에게 가르쳤나니 이는 너희가 들어가서 기업으로 차지할 땅에서 그대로 행하게 하려 함인즉//Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
(신 4:6) 너희는 지켜 행하라 이것이 여러 민족 앞에서 너희의 지혜요 너희의 지식이라 그들이 이 모든 규례를 듣고 이르기를 이 큰 나라 사람은 과연 지혜와 지식이 있는 백성이로다 하리라//Keep therefore and do {them}; for this {is} your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation {is} a wise and understanding people.
(신 4:7) 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리가 그에게 기도할 때마다 우리에게 가까이 하심과 같이 그 신이 가까이 함을 얻은 큰 나라가 어디 있느냐//For what nation {is there so} great, who {hath} God {so} nigh unto them, as the Lord our God {is} in all {things that} we call upon him {for}?
(신 4:8) 오늘 내가 너희에게 선포하는 이 율법과 같이 그 규례와 법도가 공의로운 큰 나라가 어디 있느냐//And what nation {is there so} great, that hath statutes and judgments {so} righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
(신 4:9) 오직 너는 스스로 삼가며 네 마음을 힘써 지키라 그리하여 네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라 네가 생존하는 날 동안에 그 일들이 네 마음에서 떠나지 않도록 조심하라 너는 그 일들을 네 아들들과 네 손자들에게 알게 하라//Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
(신 4:10) 네가 호렙 산에서 네 하나님 여호와 앞에 섰던 날에 여호와께서 내게 이르시기를 나에게 백성을 모으라 내가 그들에게 내 말을 들려주어 그들이 세상에 사는 날 동안 나를 경외함을 배우게 하며 그 자녀에게 가르치게 하리라 하시매//{Specially} the day that thou stoodest before the Lord thy God in Horeb, when the Lord said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and {that} they may teach their children.
(요절 : 신명기 4:9) 오직 너는 스스로 삼가며 네 마음을 힘써 지키라 그리하여 네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라//Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen.
I walked as fast as possible. Worked up quite a sweat, in fact. After about a mile, I broke into a jog and then ran as hard as I could. Finally, after about 25 minutes, I stopped. My heart was pounding. My shirt was soaked. But I had gone nowhere. I had just done 2.5 miles on the treadmill.
나는 할 수 있는 한 빨리 걸었었다. 사실상 매우 땀흘려 일했다. 1마일 정도 후부터는 약간 빠른 걸음으로 걸었으며, 다음에는 최대한 힘껏 달렸다. 마침내 25분 후에는 멈췄다. 심장이 두근거렸으며, 셔츠가 흠뻑 젖었다. 그러나 내가 어디로 간 것이 아니었다. 나는 그저 밟고 돌리는 바퀴 위에서 2.5마일을 달렸을 뿐이다.
After I cooled off, I sat down with my Bible. I was following a reading schedule and the selection for the day was from the book of Numbers. I read some of it slowly and some faster, but I felt at times that I wasn't getting anywhere - like I was back on the treadmill. Censuses were taken. The long journey was recapped. The tribes were listed and relisted. The next day, I moved into Deuteronomy. More wanderings. More about the Israelites and their land.
진정된 후에 내 성경책을 가지고 앉았다. 성경읽기표를 따르고 있었는데 그 날의 분량은 민수기부터 시작하는 것이었다. 어떤 부분은 천천히 읽고 어떤 부분은 빨리 읽었는데, 어떤 때는 내가 어디로도 가지 않은 듯한 느낌이었다. 마치 내가 밟고 돌리는 바퀴 위에 돌아온 것 같이. 인구조사가 행해졌다. 오랜 여행이 재생되었다. 지파들이 나열되었고 또 나열되었다. 다음날 신명기로 넘어갔다. 더 방랑한다. 이스라엘 사람들과 그들의 땅이 또 나온다.
But when I got to chapter 4, I was told why all that recapping was important. Moses told the people not to "forget the things your eyes have seen … Teach them to your children" (4:9). The previous reading was not about Israel going nowhere fast. It was about training, about a lesson in using God's past workings as instruction for future godly living.
그러나 4장에 이르렀을 때, 그 모든 재생이 왜 중요한지를 들었다. 모세는 사람들에게 이렇게 말했다. "네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라 … 너는 그 일들을 네 아들들과 네 손자들에게 알게 하라"(4:9). 앞에 읽은 부분들은 이스라엘 사람들이 빠르게 가서 아무 데도 이르지 않은 것을 기록한 것이 아니다. 그것은 훈련에 관한 내용이며, 하나님이 과거에 일하신 것을 사용하여 미래의 거룩한 삶을 위한 교훈으로서의 가르침에 관한 것이었다.

God speaks to us through His Word; take time to listen.//하나님은 그분의 말씀을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하십니다; 듣는 시간을 가지라고. 성경을 읽다보면 왜 이런 구절이 성경에 들어있을까 하는 생각이 들 때가 있습니다. 특히 신년 초에 성경 읽기를 작정하고 창세기부터 읽어 내려가다가 민수기나 신명기에 수 차례나 반복되는 지루한 구절을 만날 때는 더욱 그러합니다. 그러나 성경에는 의미 없이 적힌 구절이 단 하나도 없습니다. 우리가 그 의미들을 발견하지 못할 뿐이지, 모든 구절을 주신 데에는 하나님의 분명한 목적이 있습니다. 그러나 그 의미를 모를지라도 꾸준히 읽는 것이 필요합니다. 그러면 언젠가는 그 구절들의 진정한 의미를 발견하게 될 것입니다. 그것이 언제인지는 그것을 이해하기 위해 얼마나 성령님의 도우심을 구하느냐에 달려 있습니다.
